Ok So I think this is the first thread I have actually started! Anyway, My mother and I are going to Vancouver on Friday to visit my brother. We have all of Saturday in Vancouver and had left the day planning up to my brother, thinking that he would have an idea what we can do but so far he has come up with nothing. So I need some ideas! We went to Vancouver about 10 years ago and did like the science centre and Stanley Park and all, it doesn't sound like my mom wants to do the park again. So does anybody have some thoughts on this?? Thanx

The sea bus to N. Vanc.r is a nice little ride, and good shopping on the other side, markets, restaurants, etc.

The sky train to metro town mall, its huge, and interesting.

And, of course, if shopping is what you want, a good stroll along Robson Street is great, lots of stores, and
restaurants.

Don't know what's going on in B.C. Place right, should check it out, as it is the time for home shows, rv shows, etc.

I'm not into big excursions in the winter, so can't think of anything of that nature.

If you want to get exercise you could visit the downtown business district and run from beggars. Have a drink at the Fairmont Hotel during a break.

Thanx to both of you, Kreskin that a.... sounds ... like a good time... but perhaps I will avoid the beggars! I had heard that Robson Street was something to think about. I will run those ideas past my mom and see what she is up for! Thanx again

Backwater, Ontario.
Vancouver Aquarium used to be interesting. All the different varieties of fish. Only there once.

If you go there see if you can free the Sea Otters. Throw a politician or two to the old gnarly Polar Bear if he's/she's still alive

Cage lift on Grouse Mountain?? Still running??

Oldest Spruce tree in the world.......Maybe covered with snow this time of year.

Find Elvis. He was buried in an avalanche a year ago............

The beggar aspect helps one appreciate paying $18 a piece for martinis.

If you feel like playing a few slots you could check out the River Rock casino in Richmond. If you like antiques there's a place in Langley called the Big Red Barn (I think). Everything is for sale (too expensive) but it has more than most museums.

I was going to suggest this, although it is January. We were there in March, and there still was fabulous display of fruit and veggies. Hubby is a gardener; so he found it very interesting.

If you have time, go to the Museum of Anthropology at U.B.C. The Arthur Erickson designed building is stunning, as are the exhibits. There is a lot of Bill Reid's stuff there, and it will blow your mind.

Go along Commercial Drive and get some cheese at the Grotto Del Fromaggio, and some lattes at the Continental Bar. Buy some beans to take home.

Get some ice cream at Mario's Gelati, also just off Commercial Drive.

If the day is nice and you have your walking shoes on, walk along the stark beauty of Iona Beach. It's on any map of Greater Vancouver.

Walk along the part of Main Street known as Little India - from about 43rd Avenue to 51st. Check out the saris and the bangles, eat some freaking good 75 cent samosas. You cannot eat more than one, I promise.

There's lots more, but that is a start.

Oh, I almost forgot - the Cafe Deux Solelis on Commercial Drive - massive good breakfasts, the opposite of fancy.

Pangloss, that sounds wonderful! Little India really caught my attention.
I wish that I had more than just one day but my brother could only get the one day off work and my mom wasn't going to waste possible Maui time!
Jenn, I really don't know Vancouver at all where we will be there I am not that sure, we are staying at a hotel close to the airport though because our flight out leaves really early on Sunday morning.
Red Barn Antiques sounds like something that would appeal to my mom as does Gastown, I am going to print off all of these ideas and go through them with my mom and brother and see what we come up with! Can't wait!

You want to go for seafood. I mean you're in the spot right so take advantage. If you do take up the beggar run challenge, you might also enjoy heading to East Hastings and seeing if you can by some drugs, then pay for it with Canadian Tire money. Those junkies may still be able to run but they sure don't have stamina. :)

Bring some of your own fish to the Aquarium and see if you can compete with the trainers at the killer whale tank. Don't forget your whistle!

Bowling balls and escallators!

Hit a few music stores and play stairway to heaven on guitar as loud as you can.

Go to the police station and ask for a tour.

Go to a mall with a small spray bottle set to mist and ride the escallators, make a sneeze sound and spray someone on the back of the neck. When they turn around just say "heh sorry."

Get on a bus and everytime it stops to let someone off, yell "man overboard" and ring that bell like hell.

Or if you feel like a road trip, head out to my brothers place in Abbottsford and pretend like you're old friends come for a visit. I'll give you some inside information to really sell the idea. Then act snooty about where they live and the food and drink they serve you. Once you've had your fill of that, act offended and storm out saying that you've never been so insulted in all your life. PM for details.

Most of all, just remember to have fun fun fun!

Hazmart -

If you are staying close to the airport then I do recommend Iona beach and, well, one other:
Steveston.

It's a former fishing village on the southwest corner of Richmond (near the airport). There was a huge Japanese community there before the WW2 internments, now it's little shops, great seafood, and some wonderful walks along the seaward dikes of the delta. People forget that the delta is, in fact, a delta, and never walk along the ocean. It's beautiful, wild, and almost empty of people. The paths are wide, smooth and well maintained.

Steveston right? I used to go there to buy crab and shrimp right off the boats. Big kite flying contingent there too at least there was. Few people really know that Richmond is an island. Lulu island is it's name. My daughter was born there and for years I told her that she was Princess Poopsalotta of Lulu Island. She was convinced she was royalty all through kindergarten.
