Taoism instructs the sage that the wise say little. Around 600 A.D. that might have been sound advice if not appropriate when saying anything would earn you the consequences of the emperors wrath...

But like the un-said un-talked about dynamics within our own societies and cultures that permitted child abuse and spousal abuse and racism and the many-petaled flower of hypocrisy and prejudice to bloom and flourish, there is I believe a time to say what needs to be said. If we agree with the sentiment that what you don't know can't hurt you....

ah China. Nice to see you roaming about. You know I often miss the finer points of ... well... your points.

But the first thing I thought of reading your OP was how I knew everything when I was a young adult. It happened around 15 or 16 and lasted well into my 20's. Really. I knew everything. Well, everything that mattered. Oh yes, hard to believe I know, but it's true, and I made sure I let everyone know at every opportunity - especially my parents (who knew nothing, of course).

Now, by some cruel twist of fate, it appears I know that in fact I know very little. This I believe, may be the wisest thing I know for sure.

My 16 year old son has now assumed the reigns of "knowing everything" in this family, making him the legend within his own mind I once was.

Aging. Isn't it wonderful?

Humbling too.

You've got to try whiskey! In my twenties and thirties I imbibed a great deal of whiskey and found that I knew everything there was to know about ...well.....everything! Just like being a teenager only more expensive.

Well that's a relief... I was starting to think I knew something. Phew... gotta keep proving those teachers from middle school wrong.

Now what long winded post can I make up to sound important.......

ok, here's something:

When you know something, why is there nothing to say? Is it like Zelda? It's a secret to everyone?? Whoo hoo... 60 Rupees.

Why wouldn't you say something? I like to hear whatever anybody else has to say interesting that they know of. Without the sharing of knowlege, then we become kinda dumb don't we?

So let's say I'm trying to mess around with a propane BBQ and I didn't notice the fuel line wasn't fastened evenly on to the tank, but you noticed. You know something.... wouldn't it be wise to say something? I mean, you're pretty close by the BBQ, myself, the tank, and that match I'm trying to spark.

I know something.... if you don't warn me or take action to prevent this unpleasent explosion, we both might end up with a couple of shards of propane shrapnel lodged into an eyeball or spleen. Not to mention the not so pretty 3rd degree burns.

There, I shared something I knew, and if the cycle continues, the cycle of life goes on.

As the world turns, these are the days of our lives.

*puffs*

It is in fact an old truism, it is valid and China was correct in every respect to post it. What could possibly be the harm in sharing the truth?

 I never said it was invalid OR unworthy of sharing. It is a great idea to live by. I was merely poking fun at china a bit, as I am prone to teasing people.

I don't know much, not much about politics or economics or financial stuff and not much in regards to a lot of other post topics here, but I still don't say much. To busy trying to read and learn as much as possible!

well, if you know enough to read up on things you don't know about, then you already know everything you need to know.

Actually in some seriousness and on topic, we have for generations, always talked down to the new generation as they claim to know more about the world then those who lived it.

But with todays technology, the internet, global communication from one person in the world, to someone else on the other side, isn't it technically true that the younger generations might actually, finally, know something more then the current generation?

I mean for the last number of decades, everybody before Generation X, minus the Hippy generation, have always trusted in what the governments told them, and they trusted them with their safety. Now today we're all begining to learn more so, that the governments are totally whacked and screwed right up in their noggins.

People are complaining that the younger generation in the US, for example, are geared for Obama, while the older generation are going for Clinton, because she has quote quote "Experience" ~ But she's still part of that old crew. Sometimes you need a good ol flush of the system and start a new.

I'm not saying Obama will do that, I haven't a clue. But the image and message being portrayed now is that the younger generation is PO'd and fed up and desire change... complete change, regardless of experience and the chance of the entire country going to hell.... it already is. Nobody can trust any of the odler generations promising change, because they haven't a clue what change we want. And it's use that sorta count at the moment since we're starting to take over from the previous generation.

The Baby Boomers had their time to change the world, and finally it seems todays youth is finally begining to stand up and do something for once. Maybe they're all scared that we're about to take over the world and think we don't have a clue and will only destroy the world. Perhaps we will, but we only have them to look up to and learn from. Their fear is fear from their own actions.... much as my own actions will be responsible for what occurs in the next generation.

The key is not to clutter your mind with useless facts and/or figures, but where to find the useless facts and/or figures.

That sound advice will become new again soon enough already it becomes sage. Hence silence is golden. But discretion is the better part of valour and discource. IMO
