I don't care. The CBC is more irrelevent every day. The CBC's news services are floundering around in obscurity. The CBC's billion dollar plus budget is squandered on parroting political correctness and catering to special interest groups. Here in Calgary they spend 6 times the budget on an hour of local call-in show as a local private station's call-in show that has 4 times the ratings.

CTV is not much better. They are owned by Bell global media. One of thier board members,Mike Crowley, ran the liberal campaign in Ontario last federal election. No bias or conflict there.

UNBELIEVABLE!

The apology changed nothing, made no real reference to what they had done wrong, it was a sham.

The Ministry of Truth has to go, the sooner the better.

The CBC is going down the toilet, at least that seems to be the trend. Since their lockout last fall, their rating have taken a drastic hit. Their lead newscast (TheNational) has a much smaller audience share that both CTV and Global. The CBC has lost the rights to the 2010 and 2012 olympic games, and even Hockey Night in Canada may soon be airing on TSN rather than the CBC.

It would be a tragedy for this country to lose the CBC/Radio-Canada. It is not the Ministry of Truth, and what a weak reference, it is our national broadcasting service that is owned by us all, if you have a complaint, make your opinion known to them. The CBC isn't just about ratings, it's about having an independant news firm that is owned by the PEOPLE of this country and not by some multinational media corporation with personal interests.

For as much patriotic showboating as many Conservatives do in this country, I never ceased to be surprised (and hurt) by their evident contempt for any number of our national institutions which, at least for me, are a source of great national pride.

I remember listening to CBC radio during the elections and they were plugging the hell out of the Conservatives, and I remember thinking bias as well. Crying bias is often the argument postulated by both sides when asked about the media.

And Colpy, their apology was more than sufficient, and in fact, it couldn't have been clearer.

Do you happen to remember the Liberal cabinet minister for Immigration, Elinor Caplin?

Do you remember when she called the Reform Party "the party of racists and fascists"?

The day before the 2000 election, I was listening to the 3 PM CBC news on radio. There were, I believe, three items on the news cast............by far the most prominent being Ms. Caplan's accusations aimed at the Reform Party. So what?

The piece consisted mostly of the phrase "the Reform Party is the party of racists and fascists" repeated over and over in every possible context.

The kicker? The incident had occured weeks before the election. There was no possible reason for it to be included in news of the day.

It was such an obvious ploy to play games with the Canadian electorate......it was ludicrous.

Ever since then.........the sooner they go, the better.

We are lucky to have the CBC. The CBC is without a doubt the most objective, most fair, most relevant source of news for Canada. Thank God we aren't stuck with CNN and FOX along with CTV. The people who demand the end of CBC likely want us to be the fifty first state.

Not at all.

And the CBC is hardly neutral.

I simply distrust a broadcaster that is bought and paid for by the State.......he who pays the piper calls the tune........and, to be truthful, the National has grown so much more sympathetic to the Conservatives since last January........

For MacDonald:
I read a book by Malcolm Muggeridge in which he tells how George Orwell fashioned the Mministry of Truth on the BBC.........and the CBC is fashioned on the BBC, so the comparison is only once removed..........not so far off.

It's always the right wing that attack the CBC.
A broadcaster thats owned by the government will be no more biased then a broadcaster thats owned by a multi million dollar company with political interests. At least there are more regulations for a publically owned broadcaster. Look how biased Fox is!

It does not matter who is in power, the CBC will forever be a socialist propoganda machine, hell bent on mantaining its unfair share of forced piece of the pie, from its liberal supporters.

Those regulations mean FA when it comes to content other then Canadian. The CBC is as biased as it gets. period.

The problem is that media is in the business of making money. So it reports what we want to hear. Newspapers have to sell, news shows want ratings. The publics attention span isn't what it should be. So the news we get is never the full story.

I couldn't be happier for the fact that you read books, but the State is something that is hands-on and accessible, not necessarily a separate entity from the people, not our enemy. That being said, the CBC is a crown corporation... It is owned by the people but operates independantly from the government with a mandate to inform the Canadian people. It is not controlled by whatever government is in power, ever.

You cannot both denounce the CBC for being anti-Harper (against the government) and then liken it to Orwell's Ministry of Truth (who in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four was the voice of the government in Oceana, never critical of it) all in the same sentence. It is a contradiction.

If I were to humour your suspicions about the CBC, and agree that they had an anti-Harper slant (which I am not doing, but if...) then it would only mean that, like most Canadians, the CBC was being critical of whatever government in power. You will find that the people in the middle (most people), those with no party affiliation, like to criticise whomever is in power at any given time. It's the CBC's job to be critical of the Harper government, just as it will be its job to be critical of the future Dion government when the Liberals win the next election. Governments are kept in line when they know the PEOPLE are watching their every move. So Bob bless the CBC.

And you, don't know what you're talking about. The CBC broadcasts in English and French, and at least eight first nations languages. CBC is the only service in the north and far north where the other networks won't go because it doesn't pay. CBC is an important part of Canada. Canada has one network supported in part by public funds. Most countries have two or three, or more. Furthermore, most Canadians support the CBC. Biased? Given the choice, I would believe CBC ahead of any other network in North America I can think of.

The cbc provided approx 36 hours of live commercial free coverage of the liberal convention. The Consevative leadership convention got ZERO coverage, though cbc newsworld did occasionally have live updates. CPAC did have 2 0r 3 hours of live coverage. Nope,no bias there.

Hey, you're preaching to the choir here, I grew up listening to it. I did not say it was void of merit, but is most definetly not void of bias. Just because you see the world as red, does not make the CBC a better braodcaster. See Wallyj's post, facts. But the CBC is hardly a valid unbias news media source. Look at this lil piece o shyte, the piece you obviously missed, either due to your bias or by some miracle of nature. I will agree, there isn't any credible news media in the west though and the CBC is in that group to.

I love CBC, hail my favorite channel. Yea they are kinda of biased but they have hard hitting programs like 5th Estate and W5 that deal with so many great Canadian issues of corruption. Leave them alone.

Harper is the State. Perhaps this will finally put to rest the notion that the governing party has much to do with the output of this broadcaster.

Beating up on the CBC is a national pastime.
