Janet Jackson dismisses unauthorized apology after questioning Kamala Harris' race
'She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian'

Janet Jackson is claiming she did not authorize an apology after she made comments about Vice-President Kamala Harris’ racial identity in a new interview.

Jackson’s remarks about Harris came during an interview with The Guardian in which the pop star questioned the vice-president’s heritage and regurgitated what she had been “told” about the Democratic presidential nominee’s background.

“Well, you know what they supposedly said?” Jackson told the news outlet. “She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”

When the interviewer said Harris is both Black and Indian, Jackson claimed her father is actually White.

“Her father’s White. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days,” she said. “I was told that they discovered her father was White.”

Harris’ father is Jamaican and her mother, who died in 2009, was born in India.

Jackson’s comments sparked immediate backlash on social media, with many of the five-time Grammy winner’s fans accusing her of spreading “damaging disinformation.”

“This whole Janet Jackson thing just goes to show you how out of touch some celebrities are,” one person wrote. “I’ve always loved her but repeating lies!? Smh. If you don’t know about a subject, then don’t speak on it… especially with your platform. Educate yourself, please!”

“Janet Jackson is one of the most influential people in music history. It was simply irresponsible of her to repeat something she ‘heard’ regarding the very thing that they use against Kamala! Her own race,” another person commented. “We are less than 50 days away from the election. We gotta talk smarter!”

Jackson’s opinions echoed one Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made in July.

“(Harris) was only promoting Indian heritage,” Trump said in an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists convention. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black…Is she Indian or is she Black?”

As her Guardian interview made the rounds online, in a statement to Variety, USA Today and other media outlets, reps for Jackson said an “apology” attributed to the singer by Mo Elmasri, who claimed to be her manager, was not authorized.

The apology, which was published by Buzzfeed and appeared in multiple major outlets, read: “Janet Jackson would like to clarify her recent comments. She recognizes that her statements regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity were based on misinformation. Janet respects Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian and apologizes for any confusion caused. She values the diversity Harris represents and understands the importance of celebrating that in today’s society. Janet remains committed to promoting unity and understanding.”

Elmasri was not authorized to make the statement to Buzzfeed, the singer’s reps said in a statement to USA Today, nor has he ever worked on Jackson’s team.

Variety noted that the Miss You Much singer has been managed by her brother Randy for a number of years.

In an email to Variety, Elmasri, whose Internet Movie Database bio claims he has worked as a creative consultant for Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Britney Spears and Selena Gomez, pledged his support to Vice-President Harris and confirmed he did not work for Jackson.

“I no longer work for her. I was fired by Janet and Randy, after attempts to improve her image in front of public opinion and her fans, and this is something I do not deserve,” he told the outlet.

Elsewhere in her interview with The Guardian, Jackson was asked if she thinks America is ready for its first woman president, to which she replied, “Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.”

The Secret Service is investigating a report that an agent groped a Harris staff member

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A U.S. Secret Service agent has been accused of groping and sexually harassing a member of Vice President Kamala Harris’ official staff during a trip last week, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The Secret Service office of professional responsibility is investigating a misconduct allegation involving an employee, according to the law enforcement agency that is tasked with protecting the president, vice president, candidates and some members of Congress. “The Secret Service holds its personnel to the highest standards,” according to the statement released Wednesday.

Harris’ office said in a statement that “we have zero tolerance for sexual misconduct,” and that the office takes “safety of staff seriously.”

The agent was on a trip with Harris staff members last week in Wisconsin to scout possible locations for a visit from the Democratic presidential nominee when the group went out for dinner and drinks. The agent, who appeared to be drunk, is accused of groping the woman in the presence of others after they went back to the hotel, according to the people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to talk about an ongoing investigation.

The employee was taken off his detail and placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation, the Secret Service said.

The news comes as the agency is facing a mountain of criticism over two attempted assassinations of Republican nominee Donald Trump. On July 13, Trump suffered a graze wound to his ear when a shooter targeted him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A second failed assassination attempt was made on Sept. 16 at Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

A scathing bipartisan congressional report out Wednesday on the first attempted assassination found that there was no clear chain of command among the Secret Service and other security agencies and no plan for coverage of the building where the shooter positioned himself on the roof to fire the shots in Butler. The shooter was killed by the Secret Service.

Kamala Harris keeping options open for possible political comeback
Author of the article:Denette Wilford

Vice President Kamala Harris is working on determining her political future.

The 60-year-old insists she’s not ready to back down after getting demolished by Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election and becoming the first Democrat to lose the popular vote in two decades.

Harris has told her closest allies that she is “staying in the fight” and plans to consider what the future holds in the coming weeks, sources told Politico.

It’s been speculated that she could run for governor of California in 2026 or maybe even make a second bid for the presidency in 2028.

“She doesn’t have to decide if she wants to run for something again in the next six months,” one former campaign aide told the outlet.

“The natural thing to do would be to set up some type of entity that would give her the opportunity to travel and give speeches and preserve her political relationships.”

While some Democrats are looking to former first lady Michelle Obama and California Gov. Gavin Newsom to run for president in four years, a post-election poll from Echelon Insights has Harris dominating a hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary, the New York Post reported.

That said, would she want to endure that again?

Given that Newsom’s term is limited, a gubernatorial run could be better suited for the state’s former prosecutor and attorney general.

“Could she run for governor? Yes. Do I think she wants to run for governor? Probably not. Could she win? Definitely. Would she like the job? I don’t know. Could she run for president again? Yes,” former Harris aide Brian Brokaw told Politico.

“Would she have a whole bunch of skepticism from the outset, because she has run in a full-length Democratic primary where (in 2019) she didn’t even make it long enough to be in the Iowa caucus, and then she was the nominee this year?” he continued.

“People can learn a lot from their previous adversity, too.”

Harris had just over 100 days to take over Joe Biden’s campaign efforts and reintroduce herself to Americans as their possible leader, arguably too little time to sell herself and her policies to voters.

Now, with more time to map out a game plan, Harris needs to figure out where she fits in within the Democratic Party.

“There will be a desire to hear her voice, and there won’t be a vacuum for long,” a source with close ties to Harris told the outlet.

“She is not someone who makes rash decisions. She takes, sometimes, a painfully long time to make decisions,” Brokaw noted, but added that she likely still doesn’t know what the future holds.
