Canada knows China tried to influence the last two federal elections, according to a top secret briefing report obtained by Global News that said the government “must do more” to fight foreign interference.

“We know that the PRC sought to clandestinely and deceptively influence the 2019 and 2021 federal elections,” according to the briefing released by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
Ya mean. . . they tried to corrupt the purity and total honesty of Canadian elections?

Oh, dear.

Apparently, so that’s why “we” didn’t want to have an inquiry into the matter, so that we could safeguard against it in the future, etc…& thus the Rapporteur, the year of stalling, the threat of an election to keep Melanie Joly (that only the Federal NDP took seriously) from testifying, & yet here we are…

Or possibly because the Libs perceived, not without some truth to it, that the Cons were more interested in using it as a stick to bash the Libs with than as a tool to protect the Integrity of Canadian Elections.

And India too, don't forget.

Yep. China is #1, & others are involved to, to other degrees.

The declassified document, dated Feb. 24, 2023, is titled, “Briefing to the Minister of Democratic Institutions on Foreign Interference.” It called China “by far the most significant threat.”
It also named India as a foreign interference threat, predicted the problem would worsen and said, “we must do more to protect Canada’s robust democratic institutions and processes.”

Yes, but India isn't the designated Scary Monster this week.
Maybe next week though.

Commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue is investigating whether China, Russia, India and other nations interfered in the past two elections, and how information about foreign interference flowed within the federal government. The inquiry was launched after media reports accused Beijing of meddling in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections.

Most of the CSIS documents shared Thursday were entirely redacted — blacked-out. One assessment, which was partially redacted, showed that Canada was considered a "high-priority" target for Chinese interference ahead of the 2021 election.

"Intelligence concerning multiple aspects of the People's Republic of China (PRC) foreign interference and malign influence activities are of the utmost importance for the government of Canada because of the scope and impact of this threat," it reads.

"These activities involve immediate threats or grave harm to Canada's strategic interests."

As the foreign interference commission kicked off this week, the inquiry received fierce criticism from a diaspora group often targeted by China.

In a statement Wednesday, the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project (URAP) said its members will not participate in the inquiry, blaming commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue for allowing "a significant security risk" to their community and families back in China.

Some national security experts fear this will undermine the integrity of the inquiry into alleged Chinese interference in the 2019 and 2021 elections.

Why won't Uyghurs testify?

URAP executive director Mehmet Tohti says Uyghur Canadians pulled out to protest Hogue's decision to grant former Liberal MP Han Dong and current Markham Deputy Mayor Michael Chan full standing in the commission.

"We don't want to be questioned by those [who] are allegedly tied up with the Chinese Communist Party," Tohti said.

Oh, & India.

Two potentials. Chan & Dong. Both politicians.

Both Han and Chan deny the allegations against them, but with full standing, they have access to classified documents submitted to the commission and have the ability to cross-examine witnesses.

Without knowing who these people are (Chan & Dong) I wouldn't testify either. Are they compromised? Who is to say they aren't connected to the CCP without having an investigation to actually clear them one way or the other.

And that’s the issue the Uyghurs have, or they know that they’re CCP, & if they testify then Ding & Dong have complete access to everything….& the Ex-Pat Uyghurs families back in China….well…they just don’t testify.

This time around, there have been no grand public assurances that the government is committed to providing unprecedented access to information. Rather, we’ve been put on notice that obfuscation and dithering over confidentiality will be used to beat us down.

Some parties, like the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project, have already indicated they have had enough of the charade. Others, including those like members of Parliament Michael Chong and Jenny Kwan, who were the victims of shocking hostility and ineptitude from the CCP and the government, will likely persist, although it is already clear that they deserve much more information, and much better treatment from the Hogue commission.

It was the 2019 & 2021 Federal Elections that were the catalyst for this inquiry that the majority of Canadians wanted, & the Government went to “heroic” (?) efforts to avoid.

…& We’ll soon-ish heading towards another Federal Election probably about Oct 20th, 2025 but hopefully sooner:

…& personally, I’d like to see Canadians decide this coming one for themselves.

This is getting easier and easier for China & the Liberals every day it seems. The human-rights group Canadian Friends of Hong Kong says it won’t participate in Canada’s public inquiry into foreign interference, citing what it calls grave concerns about the standing granted to three politicians with alleged ties to the Chinese government.
