Liberating the Oppressed

Much has happened, been discovered, etc…in the 2000-3000 years since the Old Testament (or even the 1500 years or so for the Quran) was written.

Should the knowledge that’s occurred in the last 2-3 thousand years be factored into our understanding of things with respect to this topic (?) or should that knowledge be dismissed?

Well, as in many things, it depends who you ask I suppose. The biblical perspective would be to dismiss it, so those who take the Bible to be the fount of all wisdom would presumably do the same. Those who think The Enlightenment was actually a good thing would place a higher value on human knowledge and understanding, including most particularly our modern knowledge and understanding of what the Bible actually is and how it came to be.

Jesus’ announced His mission to liberate the oppressed in his inaugural address in the Nazareth synagogue (Luke 4:14-30). Luke-Acts chronicles Christ’ mission to the marginalized.

In Capernaum, Jesus liberated a man in the synagogue who was possessed by a demon. He delivered Peter’s mother-in-law and others who were brought to him from illness. Those beyond the reach of religion and medicine found freedom in Christ (Luke 4:31-44).
