No. Mostly fir. Clean up from the last clearing job I did. I left most of the maples standing since they have no market value and they look nice in the summer. I do the odd logging/clearing job on small acreages when I have nothing better to do. I call it recreational logging.

I live in core urban and I'm packing a 65cc Husky "hot saw" with a 21" bar.
ROFLMFAO. That is a pruning saw. Actually not bad for power. I have the Jonsered version with a 24 in bar for small stuff and a 641 Sthil for falling second growth. 28 in bar. The problem with short bars is you have to bend over too far to limb or buck anything on the ground.

You'll get 2.5-3X the heat out of maple than the same amount of fir.
True but I am not doing this for the firewood. Firewood is what is left on the ground after logging. Since all the ones I do are house sites visual is more important than money value. Unless they want the back part for pasture or something. ANd even then everyone wants some trees left.

how many multi family buildings do you know of that have fireplaces? And how many poor people can afford to buy firewood?

Apparently you are not only a slave to taxes......................

you are also a SLAVE TO LIE-beral propaganda as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE WERE DISCUSSING 19th and 18th century EUROPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And fire places and wood stoves WERE MUCH MORE COMMON THEN...................................

NOT JUST FOR HEAT - but for COOKING AS WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Irishman Frank McCourt - the author of the book "Angela`s Ashes - made into a Hollywood movie of the same name...................

was interviewed and asked what he thought of the movie depiction of Dublin ................................

and he said the main thing they got wrong was the garbage in the streets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McCourt pointed out that whenever he and his siblings were out with their mother- and if he happened to spot so much as a scrap of

paper blowing across their path - Mom would order the kids to "GRAB IT FOR THE FIRE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McCourt and his parents were living IN A MULTI UNIT Apartment building - AND THEY BURNED WOOD AND COAL FOR HEAT!!!!!!!

In those days a scrap of wood could keep you warm..............................

or cook your dinner........................................

or repair your hovel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In those days the "Rag and Bone man came around TO COLLECT - as the title suggests - ALL YOUR rags and bones and other

useful trash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bone meal - because ground up skeletons makes GOOD FERTILIZER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old rags could be re-worked into lots of things - one reason why modern asphalt roofing shingles do not last as long as they used to..................

is BECAUSE RAGS ARE NO LONGER USED IN THE MIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for fireplaces in more modern multi unit buildings.....................................

you should get into the apartment building on the south west corner of Gerrard St. and Greenwood in Toronto....................

4 story building - multiple units - beautiful fireplaces and nice carved mantels ........................................

built in the 1920`s as I recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

or head down to Etobicoke to another very charming old apartment building built on the lake shore ............................................

three floors - multiple units and a fireplace IN EACH UNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Built also in the 1910-30 era approximately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course none of those fireplaces have been used in decades - not since oil heat and electric baseboards were developed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But they were ONCE WELL USED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE MERCURY IN SKARDU, PAKISTAN PLUNGES TO A RECORD-BREAKING -21C (-5.8F)

DECEMBER 30, 2019 CAP ALLON
Pakistan is currently in the grip of severe cold wave, with the mercury on Sunday, Dec 29 plunging to record-breaking -21C (-5.8F) in Skardu — a city located in the central valley of Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to local reports, the small canals and ponds in Skardu have been frozen due to the severe low temperatures, while snowfall has also blocked many main roads and passes.

The city’s low of -21C (-5.8F) breaks Pakistan’s all-time December low temperature, which was set back in 1994 (approaching solar minimum of cycle 22).

In addition, record or near-record lows were also registered in Gupis and Bagrote with their readings of -12C; in Astore with -11C; in Gilgit with -7C; and in both Kalam and Kalat with their lows of -5C.

Dense fog is prevailing in Islamabad, in Punjab, in the upper Sindh, and also in a few districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said in its Sunday weather report.

The PMD has forecast a continuation of the “very cold conditions” over the coming days, in part thanks to continental air sweeping over the country.

I would agree with you, especially the last para, but I fear that scientific investigation has been "bought" and paid for by those who want to be in full control of the populations, especially since there is so much money at stake. It seems that any conversation challenging those so-called "beliefs" in the gods of climate change is verboten and that is why I suspect there is more to the whole thing than climate. Someone wants our money to line their pockets and that's all it's about - that and power! I have yet to be convinced otherwise. In the meantime, I will continue to drive a "fossil fueled" car that gets exceptional gas mileage, ensure that my car is tuned and running as efficiently as possible and that I act responsibly insofar as the environment is concerned. That will do more for the environment than taxing the hell out of me, that's for sure!

Just sayin'

It's difficult to understand why someone would think that the pursuit of money, the purchasing of opinion, or the desire for power, has more influence on the integrity of scientists than on that of government or commerce.

I too will continue to use my small car that runs on gasoline because I live out of town without bus service and can't afford either to move or to buy a less oil-dependent vehicle.

Whether my taxes do more for the environment than my frugal lifestyle does, will depend on how those taxes are spent. Those who protest, demanding real planning to combat climate change, look like the best hope to date for affecting how our taxes are spent.

If you are spending that much money on oil you need to look at updating your heating system. Think about a heat pump with propane backup or at least a minisplit.

As soon as you send me the funds I'll get right on it. Would love a heat pump. You need to understand that individuals have to allocate financial priorities according to their individual resources and potential future needs.

By the way "that much money" that I'm spending on oil is 500 to 650. Adding the cost of wood I'm under 1300 a year.

A pick up truck and chain saw is all one needs.

No. Health, youthful vitality and access to free "fiber" are essential - and there's the cost of the truck & saw if you don't already have them.

Circumstances and abilities vary. One size does not fit all.

Well seeing how governments can not balance the budgets taking over 50% of our collective income , how can you expect them to spend any extra tax dollars responsibly? If you notice the recent news they can’t even make a profit selling pot.

Oh, lots to talk about there. In the first place those politicians are the ones 'We The People' were gullible enough to vote for, within a bizarre party political system we put up with; even for the most part think it's fun to join in, just picking sides in & yelling at each other about everything.

Do I expect "extra"(-??) tax dollars to be spent responsibly? Not particularly but I do wish for that, however uselessly.

The budgets produced by governments are an attempt to reconcile taxation levels the public will accept with the services they want to receive, while also paying for the expenses of government, both reasonable and unreasonable (depending on your point of view.) Whether any budget will be adhered to can only be foretold by fortune-tellers. Accuracy unlikely.

Firebugs blamed for destructive Queensland fires
By AAP - 2 weeks ago
Almost 100 firebugs have deliberately started blazes across Queensland that have destroyed homes and consumed thousands of hectares of bushland.
Some 65 fires continue to burn across the state on Friday, jumping from 55 reported on Thursday, as the fire threat deepens heading into the weekend.
As firefighters remain on high alert, police revealed 103 of the destructive fires that have lashed Queensland since September were deliberately lit.
Figures obtained by AAP reveal 98 people - 31 adults and 67 juveniles - have been dealt with by Queensland police for deliberately setting fires.
A 16-year-old boy was found to have started a fire that razed 14 homes in central Queensland and dealt with under the state's Youth Justice Act.
Two more teens, 14 and 15, were charged with endangering property by fire over a blaze that destroyed two homes and forced hundreds to flee.
A young fawn has been rescued by firefighters from an intense bushfire in Moreton Bay, Queensland.
More than 120 fires are still being investigated and more people could be charged.
The firebug revelations come as fire crews continue to face challenging conditions as a strong upper ridge sweeping across the southeast combines with fresh east northeasterly winds on Friday.

SO you can buy a minisplit for under $1800 and install it yourself. Even a heat pump with a full change of ducting probably would be under $7000 so 5 years of oil/wood pays for 20 years of heating. That is not conting the difference in insurance premiums. We threw out the fireplace insert, saved $400 a year in insurance. Still have the fireplace.Minisplit does most of the year with propane furnace for the cold times.

You are under the mistaken impression that I am unhappy with our present heating arrangements, wish to change them and want your advice about that. You are wrong but thanks anyway.

??? What is the question?

Give all means of production to government and let them dole out a pittance monthly ?.
Why would you suggest that? Sounds like the worst kind of communism. How did you come up with it? Be more selective in your reading.
You of course expect to be among the party elite and get the understood perks .
I've no wish to be a member of any political party.
which one do you worship?
I despise party politics
