Bianca Andreescu’s recent victory at the U.S. Open was truly historical. She beat Serena Williams. She is only 19. This is Canada’s first Grand Slam singles win. .
But while Canada rejoices at having made a global mark in tennis – the most recent celebration having taken place in her hometown of Mississauga on the weekend – certain quarters in the media and elsewhere seem to be trying to capitalize on Bianca’s status as an “immigrant success story” rather than as a superior sportswoman who was determined to win.
The Canadian Press has openly pointed to her immigrant roots as a source for her determination, hailing her parents’ choice to move to Canada. The Globe and Mail ran a headline (among many) stating “Bianca Andreescu’s cool, hard-working demeanour comes from the example set by her Romanian parents.” Even the New York Times has gone as far as calling her “a fair bit of an immigrant story as well, with her family being from Romania.”
(Yes- her parents are NOT Muslim radicals demanding entry from Infidels - nor are they Nigerian scam artists illegally crossing the border at Roxham Rd to demand our pity and an opportunity to continue the notorious “Nigerian Letter Scams” that we are all familiar with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Andreescu and her parents are educated and disciplined people who have simply lived their lives and made the best of their abilities - WITHOUT making huge demands on the govt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(An immigrant virtually ALWAYS has a stronger skill set than a refugee or an illegal and it is DELIBERATE LIE-beral DECEPTION to try to link the three groups as economic or social equals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(LIE-berals have determinedly AVOIDED ANY EXPLANATION WHY they so often select the most awkward and difficult and least skilled immigrants for Canada!! The clincher came in a National Post analysis claiming her as “the ideal of the immigrant success story, one repeated the world over: The parents leave in search of a better life, and they find it in a new country. In this case, they have a child, and she has opportunities to grow and nurture her talent in a way she otherwise might not have had.”
(One wonders if the Andreescu family would BE ELIGIBLE TO ENTER Canada at this time?? After all, they are white, educated and resourceful- so HOW can LIE-berals buy the votes of such people?? LIE-berals MUCH PREFER the kind of people brought in under their family reunification policy that lets ONE competent immigrant sponsor an entire extended family of INCOMPETENT or aged or ill educated relatives to come to Canada - at OUR EXPENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Yes- LIE-berals seem to PREFER immigrants who are ill-educated, infirm and or aged or otherwise UNABLE to qualify to enter Canada by standard immigration channels!! LIE-berals have opened up a COSTLY back door to UNSUITABLE immigrants who can be counted on to sell their votes to LIE-berals!! NEARLY TWO THIRDS of the immigrants who have come to Canada in the past few years have come under the family reunion vote buying SCANDAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
While a lot of this may be true in essence, as a statement it is rather condescending, particularly from the receiver’s perspective. By origin, Bianca originally hails from Romania but was born in Canada where her parents moved well before her birth. She moved back to Romania as a child for a few years with them, but her life has been firmly ensconced in Canada, as she herself notes.
In a time when immigration has captured the world’s attention and an election looms in Canada, framing this remarkable win as one of immigrant origins makes sense for those who choose to use the topic as a campaign header.
But as an immigrant myself, who moved to Canada at a much later stage in life, I don’t see Bianca’s story as one of immigration. It is simply one of a young woman who had a skill and passion her parents saw, honed it, and eventually, owned it.
(The FACT that Bianca`s parents had the resources to PAY for the endless training with coaches and the costly travel to get their daughter to competitions indicates CLEARLY that the Andreescu family is NOT A STANDARD LIE-beral type immigrant selection supported by the Welfare State!!!!!!)
Using immigration as a narrative when it suits us, will not help the cause of immigration. In fact, it plays dangerously into stereotypes that pit us against non-immigrants. Stereotypes made famous by the Asian tiger moms whose drive for success feeds into their children’s educational attainments anywhere in the world. Stereotypes that have framed Syrian refugees who have found their calling in Canada’s restaurants, as born-again chefs and entrepreneurs, but thanks to Canada. Stereotypes that perpetuate the myth that immigrants are more determined because it’s somehow in our blood.
(At this point we should recall that MANY restaurant owners DEAL OFTEN IN CASH -and that money goes “under the table” and is NOT seen by CRA!!!!!!!!!)
(Further- we should HAVE GRAVE DOUBTS about letting Muslims into the country!! One has only to think of the FALSE accusations made by a Muslim girl WHO LIED to cops about a white man trying to grab her hijab and it appears she was carefully COACHED by anti white adults!! Or we should speak of the Oshawa Muslim who falsely claimed he was attacked in a public washroom by a white supremacist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Most damning of all is the claim by a Syrian family that they have received “racist death threats” that have forced them to close their restaurant - and yet there is now grave doubt IF there really were any threats made at all - and IF there were any threats - then they are likely related to an incident at a Maxime Bernier political event in which MASKED THUGS - one of whom was later proven to be the son of the Syrian restaurant owner - blocked and threatened an elderly couple and others from entering the venue where Bernier was to speak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! )
