I now have a far deeper understanding of how Hitler came to power. I have to admit that I'm more sympathetic to the German people, now that I've seen an hypnotic piper dazzle, then latch onto a frightened people. I used to wonder how such an accomplished and civilized people decayed into the utmost barbarism in a couple of decades.
Fear and uncertainty is a key element and the promise to take it all away appears to be enough.
For the first time in decades there are credible threats to American military hegemony and they are on the cusp of slipping into bring the #2 economy on Earth for the first time in a century. Scary stuff and it is well outside of how the American people see themselves.
