According to the new information, Gates knowingly lied when he told the special counsel that Manafort, after a March 2013 meeting with a lobbyist and a member of Congress, had said that Ukraine had not been mentioned in the meeting. Not only was that statement never made, the information says, but Gates himself helped prepare a report describing the discussions on Ukraine that had taken place at that meeting.


That false statement was made on Feb. 1 — the same day Gates' legal counsel filed a motion to withdraw as his defense.

Gates also pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. by making false statements regarding his status as a foreign agent, a charge initially proffered in the first indictment from Oct. 27, 2017.

Nothing to do with elections or Trump.

The real reason Trump can't stand the Russia probe

Trump built a massive real estate and marketing empire by staying out of the fray. He would come in at the last minute to close the deals, to effectively be "Donald Trump." He had zero interest in negotiating the particulars of any deal. Leave the details to the pencil pushers, he would handle closing. He succeeded by staying at 50,000 feet -- only swooping in to exert his unique sort of pressure and influence.


Mueller has made a career out of meticulousness. In any investigation (and don't forget that Mueller was the head of the FBI for a decade) the details matter hugely. It's in the details where well-crafted stories break down. It's in the details where mistakes are made. It's in the details where inconsistencies emerge.


So while Trump blusters on Twitter about alleged corruption within the ranks of Mueller's team, the special counsel silently gathers details and more details. And that makes Trump mad. Really mad. Because, big picture, he deeply believes he had nothing to do with collusion or obstruction. Mueller, Trump thinks, is missing the forest for the trees. Manafort wasn't even working for Trump when he allegedly made a bunch of illegal financial transactions! George Papadopoulos was just a guy who got coffee! On and on it goes.


But Mueller is just gathering facts and details -- and seeing what they add up to.

The Point: Trump is impatient and doesn't want to wait. Unfortunately for the President, he's not driving this car. Robert Mueller is.

Trump's friend Putin wants to install the corrupt around the world and treat the West as suckers who will pay for it. Where have we heard about getting others to pay for things like a wall? Trump bonds with the morally corrupt base over immigrants in order to make the rich richer and says Mexico will pay for it.

Because the Russians can still extract power and influence from those who are being blackmailed, why else? That is the point of holding blackmail material like that.

It will be interesting to see what threshold the Russians have for wanting to bring Trump down. So far, Donald Trump seems to fit with their agenda to a tee. What must he do to REALLY piss them off? Is he nutty enough to go there? As there World turns ...

They might but they would see that as being normal and natural and therefore not worthy of being blackmail material. Putin and Trump are clearly fellow travellers (with Putin holding all of the smarts).
