They are trying to evolve it.
Was a Supreme Court Case in the 1980s. Canadian and BC Government so dominated the indigenous people there in the 1800s that the government didn't bother signing treaties 150 years ago (unlike in the Eastern canada where peace treaties were really about making peace 200 to 300 years ago). Big mistake. Now they have to negotiate. (and maybe, as it is the human rights age, maybe the government will honor the treaties they sign today).
They are trying to evolve it? What the hell does that mean other than they don't want to get rid of it?
I agree that treaties with BCs native bands should have been made many years ago, starting in 1891 when BC joined confederation. But that was federal responsibility and all federal governments from that time on ignored it - most of them Liberal.
