Was a Supreme Court Case in the 1980s. Canadian and BC Government so dominated the indigenous people there in the 1800s that the government didn't bother signing treaties 150 years ago (unlike in the Eastern canada where peace treaties were really about making peace 200 to 300 years ago). Big mistake. Now they have to negotiate. (and maybe, as it is the human rights age, maybe the government will honor the treaties they sign today).

They are trying to evolve it? What the hell does that mean other than they don't want to get rid of it?

I agree that treaties with BCs native bands should have been made many years ago, starting in 1891 when BC joined confederation. But that was federal responsibility and all federal governments from that time on ignored it - most of them Liberal.

I'm sure the school kids are not getting much detail about MacDonald. They are not getting the whole story on the residential schools either, only the bad parts.

Hector Langevin, the Minister of Public Works under MacDonald, helped to establish the Canadian Indian Residential School System. It's thanks to that that Canada is the officially bilingual and mostly bicultural state that it is today.

Had it not been for that, Canada would have developed into a multinational federation instead.

Like him or hate him, right or wrong, he made Canada what it is today, for good or bad.
