They are trying to evolve it.

Was a Supreme Court Case in the 1980s. Canadian and BC Government so dominated the indigenous people there in the 1800s that the government didn't bother signing treaties 150 years ago (unlike in the Eastern canada where peace treaties were really about making peace 200 to 300 years ago). Big mistake. Now they have to negotiate. (and maybe, as it is the human rights age, maybe the government will honor the treaties they sign today).

They are trying to evolve it? What the hell does that mean other than they don't want to get rid of it?

I agree that treaties with BCs native bands should have been made many years ago, starting in 1891 when BC joined confederation. But that was federal responsibility and all federal governments from that time on ignored it - most of them Liberal.

From Wikipedia: "The*Act*is not a treaty; it is Canada's legal response to the treaties. Nevertheless, its unilateral nature, imposed on indigenous peoples by the Canadian government in contrast to the treaties, is itself a source of discontent among Native peoples in Canada."

So we agree sometimes.

Paying tribute to assholes is our historic legacy. Instead of tearing down statues we should be rewriting history books to reflect the truth. But the west has always made heroes out of scumbags.

You're saying the history books are not true? That means all this negative stuff about John A is bullshit. That's a relief, now put the man's statue back up!

How do you know?
MacDonald initiated residential schools: beat the Indian out of the Indian. Starved treaty Indians into giving up their land for settlement and the railroad. He was a racist scumbag and a drunk. You don't see much of that in the history book propaganda being fed our children.

I'm sure the school kids are not getting much detail about MacDonald. They are not getting the whole story on the residential schools either, only the bad parts.

So, why re-write it to suit your personal feelings?
Why re-write something that was falsified from the beginning?

How about to have a factual account of history? One that includes all of the facts.

(and am still in the dark as to how removing a statue is rewriting anything.)

I'll tell you what. You write your version for yourself and leave the rest of us alone.

Hector Langevin, the Minister of Public Works under MacDonald, helped to establish the Canadian Indian Residential School System. It's thanks to that that Canada is the officially bilingual and mostly bicultural state that it is today.

Had it not been for that, Canada would have developed into a multinational federation instead.

Like him or hate him, right or wrong, he made Canada what it is today, for good or bad.

Is that what the statue is doing?

Here's to Hector.
