Re: Kinder Morgan announces suspension of Trans Mountain expansio

When it's all said and done do you guys think the Kinder Morgan Pipeline will be built?

It will eventually get built, but it maybe after the current BC gov has changed and the KM pipeline sold to one of the governments.

The next election isn't until 2021 so are you saying that the pipeine will be in limbo for the next 3-4 years?

Not necessarily, the BC gov is hanging on to power by a thread, it could fall at almost anytime.

This might be the perfect situation to hold a binding referendum.

It's an Ersatz government at best, comprised of "two tails wagging the dog". It should be illegal. Horgan should be charged with treason.

I meant on THIS forum..(sorry about not being clear...)

Thank you for that, OB. Count me firmly on the pro-side. I am for pipelines.

Yes.

No. One way or another, the pipeline extension will continue. I favor the side wanting to buy into the line to assure KM that Canada does indeed have as stake in the line.

Me too, I've been having an argument with my 21 year old grand daughter who knows everything. A hell of a lot safer than hauling by rail!

I found myself debating the issue with a neighbor the other day, JLM. It is the first time we have come to a disagreement on something so fundamental. She once owned a house beside a pipeline and when the company - I believe it was TM - wanted to expand the line with two more pipes her and her neighbors protested. The idea was eventually dropped when a better route was found. Never in all the time she lived there was there so much as a drip of oil. She even mentioned the frequent checks of the line and pipe done by the company. She is honest enough to admit that much of her opposition is based on the 'what if' theory and once pressed conceded that the line would benefit the province economically helping to fund social programs as well as provide decent jobs. We finally reached an impasse and decided to drop the subject.

And your point ? What is the comparative damage from all of the above against the one spill in Lac Megantic ?

Trans Mountain pipeline project facing new legal challenges from First Nations

Opposition is mounting against the proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline as three First Nations launch fresh legal challenges aimed at stymying a project they say was approved without proper consultation.

Representatives from the coastal Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish nations, as well as the Coldwater Indian Band near Merritt in B.C.’s Interior, told reporters Tuesday that the federal government failed to meaningfully include them in the planning and review process before approving Kinder Morgan Canada’s $6.8-billion project.

The pipeline crosses 518km of Secwepemc territory over which the First Nations assert Aboriginal title, a type of land rights that the supreme court of Canada has recognized were never ceded or relinquished through treaties.
The Secwepemc could not oppose the original Trans Mountain pipeline being built through their territory in 1951, because it was illegal at the time for Indigenous peoples to politically organize or hire lawyers to advocate on their behalf.
“[Kinder Morgan] either does not understand the diverse realities of Indigenous rights in Canada or they are wilfully ignoring the consequences of those rights for the project,” the report says. “Either way, it should be a major red flag for investors, lenders, and other financial backers.”

It is difficult to buy into the governments commitment to consultation when they are approving a pipeline during the consultation process.

Its a sham - but to be fair nobody has ever had to negotiate with First Nations before building. Its always been afterwards - if at all.
