The bridge might be the least of the problems, Boomer. The new infrastructure needed at each end might well cost more than the bridge and then there's a multitude of problems involved with acquiring the necessary R/W. There would be huge involvement with Indian Affairs just for starters and then there's Fisheries, Environment, Grave sites and a multitude of other encumbrances! You have to remember in a populated area like that you'd have to provide for 1500 vehicles per hour in each direction. (Depending of course what the tolls would be set at) .
It's BC. Everything is over priced and over rated.

And NO we do not want a bridge. All it would do is let the riffraff from Vancouver have easy access and turn Nanaimo into an expensive bedroom community, which in turn would drive up already expensive housing on the rest of the island.
Did you notice our gas is cheaper than Vancouver even though much of it is refined in Burnaby?

No, it is a fact. Captain was off shift at the time. Mate and the other staff member were off the bridge long enough to miss a course correction and hit Gill island 15 minutes past course correction time. Union tried really hard to whitewash the story.
