Canada’s approach to “fighting” climate change is based on magical thinking.
Consider: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced to much fanfare that he is going to ratify the Paris climate treaty.

In doing so, he has pledged to lower our industrial greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change to the same levels as former prime minister Stephen Harper promised, back when the Liberals called Harper a climate denier.

Trudeau is never going to achieve Harper’s targets -- 17% below 2005 levels by 2020, 30% below by 2030 -- because our current level of technology makes it impossible to do so without causing a massive recession.

(I say the ONLY way to make such massive cuts is to FORBID us to use some of our technology and no democratic govt can simply order you not to heat your house or drive your car or operate your business! Govt hope for carbon reduction MUST have the support of the majority of Cdns if there is to be success in the long term!)

Harper was never going to achieve Harper’s targets.

In fact, no Canadian prime minister going back to Brian Mulroney, through Jean Chretien, Paul Martin, Harper and, as we shall soon see, Trudeau, has ever come close to meeting his promised emission cuts, which keep getting watered down even though they’re still impossible to meet today.

But even if every nation on Earth, including Canada, fulfilled its emission cuts submitted to the UN -- also impossible -- all the Paris treaty would do, according to climate scientists, is lock the world into dangerous global warming, far above the 1.5C to 2C threshold they say is the upper limit.

If Canada, or any country, fails to achieve its emission targets under the Paris treaty, nothing happens.

The treaty has no mandatory deadlines or penalties for failing to reach these targets.

(All the Carbon Crap and Trade deals being set up by govts have NOTHING to do with environment and they have EVERYTHING to do with fueling that rich govt gravy train! It`s not a CARBON PLAN Our brainless Boy is crafting-it`s a GET RICH QUICK PENSION SCAM for the benefit of civil servants!)

All the Paris treaty requires is that countries report their targets and progress made towards achieving them, but there is no penalty if they don’t.

(Its just like the not so reliable reporting on the performance of the Greek economy- shortly before it fell into a death spiral! Paris Accord numbers will be no more reliable than Greek govt bonds!)

Trudeau and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna say they are going to establish a national carbon price following negotiations with the provinces.

But even if they succeed in bringing in a national carbon price of, say, $30 a tonne, the level of B.C.’s carbon tax and the highest in the country at present, emissions will be virtually untouched.

(IN fact the BIGGEST carbon producers will continue as if nothing has changed! Corporations are all making plans to DEMAND exemptions from govt-this is why European Carbon crap deals have not cleared their air! So either govt will EXEMPT companies or watch as jobs and revenue will LEAVE CANADA-this is one main reason why General Motors has not yet committed to any new production at their Oshawa Plant-in spite of that plant consistently having the highest quality workmanship in North America! GM is waiting to see how stupid Our Boy and the Wynne-bag will be over carbon `deals`.)

The B.C. government itself says its revenue neutral carbon tax, widely praised as one of the best in the world, is only going to reduce B.C.’s emissions by three megatonnes (Mt) annually by 2020.

By contrast, if Trudeau is to make good on Harper’s target for 2020, which is now his target, Canada will have to reduce its emissions by 146 Mt.

That’s the equivalent of shutting down Canada’s electricity sector, which emits 78.2 Mt of GHG annually, along with most of the agriculture sector, which emits 72.9 Mt of GHG annually, in less than five years.

Canada would need a carbon tax of at least $150-per-tonne to achieve these kinds of emission cuts that quickly, which would destroy our economy.

(And such costs would result in a revolution with LIE-beral knuckleheads thrown out of office!)

The only way to achieve cuts at the level and speed the Trudeau government is promising would be through a revenue neutral scheme called carbon fee and dividend, in which every dollar the government imposes in carbon taxes is returned to the public through equal, monthly, dividend cheques.

(And as we know that revenue neutral approach will NOT fly for LIE-berals as their party policy DEMANDS they supply massive new buckets of gravy for civil service Hogs. For LIE-berals-no new flow of gravy equals election DEFEAT as Hogs seek out better deals with other parties! Besides which a `revenue neutral` deal will STILL CAUSE massive upheaval! Its all very well to offer govt cash to people who will park their car and take transit- but the existing transit is already OVERLOADED at peak hours! With NO practical govt plan in sight to build MORE!)

But our politicians aren’t going to do that because it wouldn’t increase government revenues, which is their real aim, as opposed to reducing emissions.

What Trudeau’s carbon pricing scheme will actually become is a permanent sin tax imposed on Canadians, punishing them for the sin of using fossil fuel energy, which will swell government revenues by billions of dollars annually but do nothing to reduce emissions. That’s what happened in Europe and it’s exactly what’s going to happen here.

(Govt has not crafted an environmental plan-what they have created is ONLY A HOG PENSION PLAN!)

(If govt was serious about the environment, their quickest and easiest way to clear the air is to cut back on Hog gravy-AND balance the budget and stop piling up economy killing debt in the process!)

A new study by the Fraser Institute suggests Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking the nation’s finances down the same black hole of never-ending deficits and debt that his late father did when he was prime minister in the 1970s and early 1980s.

“Because the federal government seems to be on the road to revisiting the damaging fiscal policies of the 1970s,” Lakehead University economics Professor Livio Di Matteo warns in, A Federal Fiscal History: Canada, 1867 to 2017, “Canadians should question whether we’re embarking on another transitional period ... that, like Lester Pearson’s and Pierre Trudeau’s time in office, will lead to years of deficits and ultimately another debt crisis.”

(Is it a hard thing to understand that Our idiot Boy Justin HAS absorbed ALL of his fathers vile values and beliefs? The idiot son shares Pierre`s nasty anti western values. Its why Pierre spoke fondly of French Vichy govt collaborating with Nazis, why he spoke of the British war against Hitler as “British Imperialism”, why he spoke in favour of Soviet leader Stalin. Di Matteo says that aside from global wars and economic downturns, “the only other time the federal government kicked off a deficit spending spree and expanded the size and role of the federal government, was in the mid-1960s and 1970s under (Liberal prime ministers) Lester Pearson and then Pierre Trudeau.”

That is, Di Matteo warns, until the election of Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government in 2015.

He notes that Pierre Trudeau never once delivered a balanced budget during his 14 years as prime minister from 1969 to 1984 (interrupted only briefly by the nine-month Joe Clark Progressive Conservative government of 1979 to 1980), leaving behind a massive, for the time, $37.2 billion annual deficit in his final year in office.

Under Pierre Trudeau, Di Matteo says, government program spending skyrocketed from $12.9 billion to $84.3 billion, the net federal debt ballooned from $19.3 billion to $212.6 billion and the debt-to-GDP ratio, a key indicator of overall economic health, soared from 23% to 42.2%.

Di Matteo warns that given Justin Trudeau’s financial track record so far, he appears to be following in his father’s footsteps.

During the 2015 federal election, Trudeau promised Canadians that in order to fulfill his election promises, his government would record projected deficits of $9.9 billion in 2016-17, $9.5 billion in 2017-18, $5.7 billion in 2018-2019, and a surplus of $1 billion in 2019-2020.

He also promised that by 2019-2020, the Liberals would reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio from 30% to 27%.

But following the election, when the Liberals presented their first budget in March, 2016, Trudeau almost tripled his projected 2016-17 deficit to $29.4 billion, followed by $29 billion in 2017-18, $22.8 billion in 2018-19, $17.7 billion in 2019-20 and $14.3 billion in 2020-21.

Since then, the Trudeau Liberals have added $31.7 billion to their projected deficits and abandoned their election promises to eliminate the deficit by 2019 and to reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio to 27% by that year.

Indeed, Di Matteo notes, under Trudeau’s current fiscal plan, program spending is projected to hit $291.4 billion this year, a $40 billion increase from 2014, while the net debt of $727.5 billion this year will increase to $759.5 billion in 2017-18.

(Trudope thinking has always been clear and obvious and based on Soviet revolutionary thinking which dictated what conditions the revolution needed to succeed. The only `work` a carbon tax does is CLEAN OUT THE WALLETS of ordinary people while giving the most wealthy members of our society (politicians and civil servants) a GIANT slush fund they can dip into so they can continue to ramp up THEIR carbon foot print. The carbon foot print of ordinary people (those who don’t have a place in the government financed gravy train) shrinks while the carbon footprint of hogs at the trough expands like a hot air balloon full of Lie-beral entitlements-and eliminates the benefits of our sacrifice!

Some people claim that the best way to reverse global warming is to ruin the poorest Canadians by closing down industries they deem to dirty and forcing Cdns out of work and forcing Cdns to give up their cars while ignoring the fact that 75 percent of all the air pollution related to `transportation` is produced by airplanes. Transportation is defined as anything (planes, trains, automobiles, trucks, ships) that carry any type of goods or passengers or services. A twenty five percent reduction in pollution from cars is negligible in the global picture since modern cars are such a small part of the total of pollution sources but a twenty five percent reduction in aircraft miles flown is a MAJOR environmental influence. In the 9 months after the 9/11 terror attack when twenty five percent of the world airline fleet was grounded, there was MEASURABLE IMPROVEMENT in global air quality. We need food delivered, need industrial activity to clothe and feed and house ourselves. WE DON’T need a swarm of overpaid civil servants jetting off for fun and games in the sun around the increasingly polluted world at our expense and some people hate Harper for not accepting their hypocrite views on how to solve global warming !

Justin Trudope hates Harper because Harper is smarter and keeps exposing the moral and intellectual limitations of Trudope.

Vicious criminals hate Harper because, thanks to Harper, it is now a little harder to find a `get out of jail free card` now that so many `hug a thug` Lie-beral appointees have been replaced by Conservatives.

TORONTO - Ontario’s budget watchdog says the province’s budget will steadily deteriorate into deficit after this fiscal year- 2017. The Liberal government delivered a balanced budget this year, and projects it will stay in the black for at least the next two years. But the financial accountability officer says in a report Wednesday that staying in balance will likely require additional fiscal measures.

(Which translates from “LIE-beral speak” into plain English as HIGHER TAXES! Ontari-owe, Quebec and California have joined together in a Carbon crap and trade scam modelled on the disgraced European model riddled with criminal fraud and false reporting of green house gas emissions- with California planning a fifteen percent INCREASE to its carbon tax for 2018- and further future increases in excess of 10 percent per year! It offers a HUGE cash flow for LIE-berals and one that we cannot afford since we are already drowning in debt and the carbon crp DOES NOT clean the air- it ONLY cleans wallets of cash-as the Europeans have proved!)

The report says this year there is strong tax revenue — such as income tax and land transfer tax due to a hot housing market — and there is one-time revenue, such as from the partial sale of Hydro One.

(And of course LIE-berals have killed off the “hot housing market” so there will not be grand revenue from that- with dire consequences for both Ontari-owe and City of Toronto- with Toronto even more vulnerable than Queens Park and looking at a gaping hole in its yearly budget!)

But after this year, the financial accountability officer is projecting more moderate growth and higher expenses, leading to deficits.

(At a point AFTER the accountability officer wrote this report- LIE-berals read the tea leaves and decided their future does not include an election victory in June/2018 and that they will be out of power for the next four years- but LIE-berals HAVE moved to protect their civil service Hog pals by offering them raises in pay totaling 7.5 percent over the next 4 years. Hogs have resigned themselves to this offer- one they see as TOTALLY INADEQUATE but have accepted the 7.5 percent as being the best offer they will be getting in the next few years! Hog pension plans are so rich that LIE-berals cannot shovel in the cash fast enough to keep the plans from collapsing into bankruptcy- hence the LIE-beral price gouging on electricity and the closing of electricity account books so the public will not be able to see what manner fo slush fund LIE-berals have built on electricity!)

(OSSTF/Ontari-owe high school teachers alone are looking at a pension deficit and debt totaling 55 billion dollars by 2018- with another 18 civil service unions right behind OSSTF and ALL with their hands out DEMANDING BILLIONS of dollars that we just do not have! This is the face of LIE-beral bankruptcy! LIE-berals cannot pay for the promises already made and certainly cannot pay for any new promises and cannot get elected without Hog support so LIE-berals must keep shovelling whatever cash they can find into Hog pockets- it wont be enough to make Hogs satisfied but it will probably ensure continued Hog support for LIE-berals- and this will ensure that inhabitants of Ontari-owe continue brawling over taxes and debts- with LIE-berals counting on us having short memories and re-electing them in 2022!)

Finance Minister Charles Sousa says his projections are prudent and take into account the growing economy.

(Too bad Sousa does not take into account frozen wages, reduced work hours and jobs lost as companies either close up and move out of Ontari-owe or cut costs by laying off people who will then turn to unemployment insurance and welfare- thus producing more soaring debt for both govt and for private people. Financial fake news maker Sousa has provided a carefully edited version of the world seen through HIS rose coloured glasses and he assumes- probably correctly- that he will never be called to account for his baloney as its likely he will NOT be finance minister- nor much of anything else after June 2018!)

TORONTO - Food bank visits in Canada’s most populous city are back up to levels seen after the last recession hit the country, with a spike in the number of seniors accessing their services in the last year, according to a report released Monday.

The Daily Bread Food Bank’s annual report shows that there were nearly one million food bank visits in Toronto between April last year and March this year. The figure is the highest number in the city since 2010, which is when the organization says the effects of the 2008 recession hit residents the hardest.

It also says people are relying on food banks longer than before with the average length increasing to 24 months in 2017, up from 12 months in 2010.

The numbers suggest a state of affairs that is not being captured by standard economic indicators, the food bank said.

“So many seniors who are of course less likely to be getting support from other sources or who are less likely to be able to get outside sources of income such as employment and also have greater health-care needs are more vulnerable to these types of changes in the economy around inflation.”

Wanda Morris, vice-president of advocacy for CARP, formerly known as the Canadian Association for Retired Persons, said the rise in food bank use among seniors is “a huge concern.”

One factor may be that seniors aren’t getting all the support they are entitled to, she said, particularly through the Guaranteed Income Supplement program.

Low-income seniors are eligible for the program if they receive Old Age Security, have an annual income below a specific threshold and have lived in Canada at least 10 years. But research shows thousands of seniors who qualify aren’t claiming it, Morris said.

“Part of the problem isn’t that there isn’t a program, it’s how do we get our most vulnerable seniors to take advantage of what is available for them,” she said, noting that many seniors don’t have internet access.

She said housing costs are also an issue for people on a fixed income.

Daily Bread said its findings “reinforce the observation that the current system of income support is inadequate to deal with the labour market, economic realities and an aging population.”

Two government initiatives — one provincial, one federal — may help alleviate the strain on low-income residents, Matern said.

Ontario’s basic income pilot project is being rolled out in several municipalities, including Hamilton and Thunder Bay, Ont., in an effort to reduce poverty. The federal government, meanwhile, is working on a national housing strategy meant to increase access to affordable homes.

TORONTO - Hindus from across Toronto plan to protest outside a North York middle school until a controversial Friday prayer session for 400 Muslim students is stopped.

The Canadian Hindu Advocacy is one of a number of Toronto-area groups who are opposed to the 30- to 40-minute services that occurred in the cafeteria of Valley Park Middle School on Overlea Blvd. from November to March.

An imam from a local mosque is brought to school to head the service, officials said. During the service male students are made to sit in front of the girls.

“This is alarming and unacceptable,” said Advocacy director Ron Banerjee. “We respect the separation of church and state.”

He said his group will be sending letters of protest to the Toronto District School Board in the next few days and calling for an end of the noon-time services. That will be followed by protests in November, when the services resume, if the prayers are to continue next school year.

“There’s not supposed to be any religious classes taking place in public schools,” Banerjee said. “We will be asking the board to stop the practice.”

He said school officials stopped students from reciting the Lord’s Prayers years ago and his group will picket the Muslim classes if the practice isn’t stopped.

“Our organization has received many complaints from Hindu students and parents in the Valley Park Middle School region,” Banerjee said.

He said his group would like to begin a discussion with TDSB authorities aimed at restoring secular education within the school system.

“We would also like to discuss the serving of halal meat within TDSB schools,” he said. “Our organization is determined to ensure all Hindu students are provided non-halal meat alternatives.”

(Halal meat is produced by following Islamic instructions in which the animal has its throat cut and is allowed to bleed to death. The animal is fully conscious at the time of the throat cutting and will take time to pass out from blood loss. This in sharp contrast to standard Cdn meat preparation in which an animal is electrocuted or clubbed on the head to produce instant death- or at least render the animal unconscious so it will not feel anything further. Clearly, Hindus are disturbed by the Halal method of producing meat.)

Area resident Khalid Sheikh, who claims to be president of Parents For School Not for Political Parties, said local school councils have been “hijacked and controlled” by Muslim groups and political parties.

She said the program began after discussions with parents, community leaders and the school administration.

Malcolm Buchanan, of Civil Rights in Public Education, said he has no problems with the Muslim prayer service as long as it doesn’t take place while classes are in session.

“Schools are for learning and not religious ideology,” said Buchanan. “We have no problems as long as it doesn’t take place during school time or the kids are not forced to take part.”

TDSB officials said on Monday the prayer sessions have been taking place for three years and are designed to help with the safety of students, who do not have to leave school to attend mosque.

The officials said the prayer sessions are working well and they haven’t been approached about making changes.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is leading one of the costliest governments since 1870, according to a study by the Fraser Institute released Thursday.

The study looks at per-person spending by all of the prime ministers, year over year, adjusted for 2017 dollars. According to its data, the Liberal prime minister's budget for 2017 amounts to the second highest year for spending, with a projected $8,337 per-person spending, putting it just $38 shy of Stephen Harper's 2009 Conservative government, which was dealing with a recession.

(And yet HYPOCRITE LIE-berals whine that Harper did not do enough to aid Cdns suffering from that recession! And LIE-berals do not want to discuss the HUGE pressure put on Harper by civil service Hogs to spend even more! The Hogs were outraged that Harper would seek to rein in govt spending at their expense by freezing their wages- but Hog greed and LIE-beral lust for power are not founded on logic!)

Since taking office in 2015, Trudeau has also increased per-person spending at an average of 5.2% a year, which is far higher than Harper's, whose spending, from 2006 to 2015, increased at an average of 1.3% per year. This even eclipses that of his late father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the Liberal prime minister from 1968-1978 and 1980-1984, whose average spending increase was 4.2% per year.

(In other words Our idiot Boy has accepted the challenge and is spending hard and fast to eclipse all others to become the most wasteful and extravagant prime minister in Cdn history!)

Here is some other data from the study:

John A. MacDonald's 1870 Liberal Conservative Party government had the lowest per-person spending at $100.50, while Harper's had the highest in 2009 at $8,375

Conservative/Unionist PM Sir Robert Borden (1911-1920) had the largest average annual increase in spending at 12.8%, which was largely influenced by the First World War

Conservative Party PM Arthur Meighen (1920-1921, 1926) had the largest average annual decrease in spending at 23.1%. (after WW 1 ended!)

(LIE-beral govts led Canada for a total of 70 years in 20th century so with Conservatives holding the record for being most frugal during those years when there was no war, it becomes clear that virtually all of our debt from that time period comes from free spending LIE-berals throwing gravy at their pals!)

Since the Second World War, Liberal PM Louis St. Laurent (1948-1957) had the largest average annual increase at 7%, partially due to spending on the Korean War, and the Progressive Conservatives' Joe Clark (1979) had the largest decrease at 4.8%

More recently, the PC's Brian Mulroney (1985-1993) and Liberal's Jean Chretien (1994-2003) each saw annual decreases of 0.3%, while per-person spending by Liberal PM Paul Martin (2004-2005) increased by 2.6%

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is leading one of the costliest governments since 1870, according to a study by the Fraser Institute released Thursday.

The study looks at per-person spending by all of the prime ministers, year over year, adjusted for 2017 dollars. According to its data, the Liberal prime minister's budget for 2017 amounts to the second highest year for spending, with a projected $8,337 per-person spending, putting it just $38 shy of Stephen Harper's 2009 Conservative government, which was dealing with a recession.

(And yet HYPOCRITE LIE-berals whine that Harper did not do enough to aid Cdns suffering from that recession! And LIE-berals do not want to discuss the HUGE pressure put on Harper by civil service Hogs to spend even more! The Hogs were outraged that Harper would seek to rein in govt spending at their expense by freezing their wages- but Hog greed and LIE-beral lust for power are not founded on logic!)

Since taking office in 2015, Trudeau has also increased per-person spending at an average of 5.2% a year, which is far higher than Harper's, whose spending, from 2006 to 2015, increased at an average of 1.3% per year. This even eclipses that of his late father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the Liberal prime minister from 1968-1978 and 1980-1984, whose average spending increase was 4.2% per year.

(In other words Our idiot Boy has accepted the challenge and is spending hard and fast to eclipse all others to become the most wasteful and extravagant prime minister in Cdn history!)

Here is some other data from the study:

John A. MacDonald's 1870 Liberal Conservative Party government had the lowest per-person spending at $100.50, while Harper's had the highest in 2009 at $8,375

Conservative/Unionist PM Sir Robert Borden (1911-1920) had the largest average annual increase in spending at 12.8%, which was largely influenced by the First World War

Conservative Party PM Arthur Meighen (1920-1921, 1926) had the largest average annual decrease in spending at 23.1%. (after WW 1 ended!)

(LIE-beral govts led Canada for a total of 70 years in 20th century so with Conservatives holding the record for being most frugal during those years when there was no war, it becomes clear that virtually all of our debt from that time period comes from free spending LIE-berals throwing gravy at their pals!)

Since the Second World War, Liberal PM Louis St. Laurent (1948-1957) had the largest average annual increase at 7%, partially due to spending on the Korean War, and the Progressive Conservatives' Joe Clark (1979) had the largest decrease at 4.8%

More recently, the PC's Brian Mulroney (1985-1993) and Liberal's Jean Chretien (1994-2003) each saw annual decreases of 0.3%, while per-person spending by Liberal PM Paul Martin (2004-2005) increased by 2.6%

(WE see a consistent pattern here of LIE-berals spending madly for years- until Cdns grow angry and dump them out in favour of Conservatives who must struggle to restore fiscal order. Whoever becomes the next premier of Ontari-owe in 2018 will inherit a massive collection of LIE-beral fiscal messes!)

(Firstly there is the LIE-beral fake balanced budget that relies mainly on the sale of Ontari-owe Hydro to balance the books for this one year- plus LIE-berals raiding and emptying all provincial emergency funds so in 2019 the budget will START with a 5 billion dollar hole that must be filled- and not including the series of raises in Hog pay provided by contracts recently signed by LIE-berals!)

(There will also be the tax hit from LIE-beral carbon crap and trade which apparently involves sending several billion dollars to Quebec to purchase carbon credits for Ontari-owe-thanks to Quebec having so much water powered electrical generation- and don’t ask how this carbon credit aides the environment- not even a LIE-beral can properly explain it without descending into incoherent nonsense! With the added bonus that California-which is partnered with Ontari-owe on this carbon crap- is planning regular and major increases in the cost of Carbon credits- with Ontari-owe and Quebec required to play and pay along or see the whole carbon credit scam disintegrate and expose the LIE-beral environmental sham!)

(There is also the matter of enormous sums of money promised by LIE-berals for civil service Hog pension plans! Its money LIE-berals promised in years past in exchange for critical Hog votes. Its money we did not have when the promises were made and its money we don’t have now either. Any attempt to produce such money will break our economy!)

(If Conservatives win the next election then look for HUGE labour unrest in Ontari-owe as spoiled Hogs demand that gravy be magically created for their pension plans which are rapidly approaching bankrupt status due to govt not being able to shovel in the cash fast enough to satisfy Hogs. Hogs will launch crippling strikes at every opportunity and at every excuse with the goal of preventing Conservatives from governing! With Hogs utterly indifferent to cost and consequences of their spiteful behaviour-even if it ruins us. On the other hand, if LIE-berals cling to power in the next election then look for all manner of fees and taxes to soar in cost as LIE-berals gut our economy in order to pay for their gross promises! With the added bonus that we will have to go through a similar economic war 2 years later when Our idiot Boy Justin leads his free spending, Muslim loving hordes into the next federal election!)

First Nations cigarette maker suing the feds for billions.

In an ironic twist, the biggest manufacturer of Native cigarettes in Canada is suing the federal government for $3 billion for failing to stop the proliferation of contraband tobacco producers.

The lawsuit, filed in the Ontario Court of Appeal at the end of June by Grand River Enterprises’ Jerry Montour and three other principals in the company, accuses the Attorney General of Canada of “malfeasance in public office, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of aboriginal rights.”

The foursome, all status Indians, is seeking $1.5 billion in damages for revenues allegedly lost to the approximately 50 unlicensed and therefore illegal cigarette manufacturers in the province competing with their brands, and another $1.5 billion for the government’s failure to close them down.

The feds, in turn, have yet to file a statement of defence.

The irony, of course, is that GRE manufactures millions of cigarettes a day at its processing plants on the Six Nations reserve near Brantford, cigarettes that show up at smoke shacks on reserves across the province, and are then sold illegally to non-aboriginals for almost two-thirds less than smokes sold legally at convenience stores.

A tax-free baggie of 200 loose cigarettes, in fact, can cost as little as $8 at a reserve smoke shack.

The resulting loss in tax revenues from the illegal sale of contraband tobacco to both the Canada Revenue Agency and the province of Ontario represents almost a billion dollars annually.

(Natives of course were the first to discover Tobacco and to smoke it in a pipe on ceremonial occasions. They introduced the weed to Europeans who adapted the stuff for their convenience- creating the cigar and later the cigarette businesses. When native bands began signing their treaties with white govt, they were granted the ongoing right to grow and use Tobacco as part of their cultural heritage. But of course cigarettes and cigars and `sin taxes` on these products are a part of modern life in white society. It is only in recent years-as the sin taxes got ever higher- that natives began bending their cultural heritage to include selling cigarettes to white people while avoiding the sin taxes that make cigarettes so costly in local stores. Natives who defend their right to sell cigarettes without collecting or paying sin taxes are not engaged in any traditional practice- they are simply money grubbing tax cheats.)

The lawsuit is based on two theories of liability – the “forced incorporation” of GRE, and the “failure” of the federal government to “enforce” its agreement to come down hard on First Nation cigarette manufacturers churning out products without a licence.

It was a raid by the RCMP on GRE back in the mid-1990s that resulted in GRE reluctantly agreeing to pay federal excise taxes to avoid being shut down, with the feds then promising to “intensify enforcement against contraband to level the playing field between GRE and other on-reserve tobacco manufacturers.”

GRE argues in the court document that the federal government, namely through the Attorney General’s office, has “failed to implement or administer what has been cited as the 1994 Anti-Smuggling Initiative and, as a result of not enforcing laws against the production of contraband cigarettes by other First Nation profiteers, it has caused Montour and company to “incur substantial losses.”

(I day its hard to argue against the GRE position- if one company has to pay then ALL should be made to pay. And since ALL cigarettes that are sold by natives in Ontari-owe are NOT a part of native tradition since it is white people who invented the product then it is fair that all natives MUST be made to pay the sin taxes on the product they are selling.)

A recent study by the National Coalition Against Contraband Tobacco shows a full third of cigarettes in Ontario are purchased illegally, with Northern Ontario breaching 60%.

It’s all price point. A carton of 200 professionally-packaged contraband cigarettes, which can be pumped out at a rate of 10,000 cigarettes a minute, can be purchased on a reserve — no questions asked — for as little as $30 while an all-taxes-in carton of legal cigarettes costs upwards of $115 at a typical convenience store.

(Native hypocrites want to have it both ways- they want to make a nice profit-cheating the govt of taxes while selling a highly addictive health hazard while avoiding any need to pay taxes that would cover some of the health care costs their product generates.)

This is not to say, however, that Jerry Montour, or his co-plaintiffs Kenny Hill, Curtis Styres and Gregory Scott Smith, are new to the court system. Far from it.

GRE and its distributors have faced litigation for non-payment of taxes by dozens of attorney generals in the United States, which is the primary destination of the GRE cigarette brands that their licence permits them to produce.

GRE’s consistent argument is that their status as a First Nation company should make them exempt from paying state taxes. The consistent result, however, has been GRE losing its court battles, and having to pay a hefty fine.

In Arkansas, for example, a recent fine was $20 million. That’s a lot of money to be smoked out.

(I say the tax exempt status granted to native a hundred years ago is part of a larger problem- that treaty writers and signers never saw coming. It was always expected that natives would continue living in relative isolation away from white people. Law maker of a hundred years back simply could not envision modern long haul trucking industry nor could the conceive of air freight! Thus the tax exempt status was NEVER expected to be used in the larger white society as native cigarette makers are doing. LIE-beral failure to deal with tax cheats has made this mess. But what else can we expect from wretched LIE-berals who are so craven in the face of anger and defiance?
