Chrystia Freeland: Canadians Should Be ‘Prepared’ For Russian Efforts To Destabilize Political System

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canadians should be “prepared” for Russian attempts to destabilize the country’s political system like those directed at the United States.

At a press conference with Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, where the government announced it isextending its training mission with Ukraine until 2019, Freeland was asked about a series of articles on pro-Russian websites alleging one of her grandparents was a Nazi sympathizer.

The Globe and Mail’s Robert Fife asked Freeland, who has been banned from entering Russia, if she saw this as a campaign by the Russians to “smear and discredit” her.

“Let me start Rob by saying that I don’t think all Russians dislike me,” Freeland said. “I have many close and good Russian friends and I very much enjoyed living and working in Moscow as a foreign correspondent.

“I think that it is also public knowledge that there have been efforts, as U.S. intelligence forces have said, by Russia to destabilize the U.S. political system. I think that Canadians and indeed other western countries should be prepared for similar efforts to be directed at us.”

Those attempts were highlighted in an intelligence report, prepared by the FBI, CIA and National Security Agency, that said Russian President Vladimir Putin directed efforts to intervene in the U.S. election.

“Russian efforts to influence the 2016 US presidential election represent the most recent expression of Moscow’s longstanding desire to undermine the US-led liberal democratic order, but these activities demonstrated a significant escalation in directness, level of activity, and scope of effort compared to previous operations,” the three agencies concluded in the January report.

Freeland said she is confident in Canada’s democracy and that “we can stand up to and see through those efforts.”

With Trudeau leading the NATO sabre rattling with Russia what should we expect?

So the Libs have seen the latest polling and want to lay the Russian carpet down for when the lose at least their majority next election...........

As we become increasingly disillusioned about the growing disparity between the Trudeau promise and its reality, another betrayal of that promise is pending. Like his neoliberal soul sister in Ontario, Kathleen Wynne, who insists that selling off 60% of the provincial crown jewel known as Hydro One is a no-brainer, Mr. Trudeau apparently thinks it is a keen idea to consider delivering our national airports over to profiteers, a.k.a. the private sector, to raise money for his 'national vision.' The upcoming federal budget looks to begin the process:
The budget is expected to signal the government’s interest in finding a way to tap the value of airports with a process, perhaps led by Transport Minister Marc Garneau, to more formally explore selling them off, the Star has learned.

The potential benefit for Ottawa is huge. One study done by the Vancouver airport authority estimated that the federal government could reap between $8.7 billion and $40.1 billion by selling off the country’s eight largest airports, including Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
That may be good news for a government with a burgeoning deficit, but bad news for the rest of us:
Yet the privatization scheme is ringing alarm bells among airlines, airport operators and some municipalities who warn that handing over Canada’s airports to owners with a profit motive sets the stage for rising fees that will force travellers to pay more.

Vancouver airport has teamed with those in Ottawa and Calgary on a public information campaign to oppose privatization.

“We think it’s a bad idea,” Craig Richmond, the chief executive officer of the Vancouver Airport Authority, told the Star.

“This idea of a one-time payment, that’s like selling the family jewels and then regretting it forever,” he said in an interview.
The consequences of such a sale will be far-reaching and costly for those who fly:
... the authority concludes that privatization would add “hundreds of millions of extra costs” that would have to be recovered through cost-cutting, increased fees and reduced investment in airport infrastructure.

“It would be too costly for a for-profit buyer to acquire an airport such as YVR without reducing services and passing these costs on to airport users through higher fees and charges,” the report states.
So while the private sector may salivate over the prospect of windfall profits, as is the norm in the neoloiberal vision embraced by people like Trudeau and his fellow travellers, the rest of us, the mere peons in this 'grand' vision, will be left to pay the price.

LOL well, we all know that the Russians have always had their eyes on Newfoundland, hey!! Any attempts at destabilizing our political arenas by Russia is so absurd that if Putin is reading or has been given this Freeland's extremely fearful article, he must have had a good laugh before killing or putting the person stupid enough to hand him this article in jail.

What can Russia do to undermine democracy? It doesn't matter what they do, if anything as long as we continue our democratic processes.
It is really laughable how CNN goes on about Russia. It isn't Russia destroying their democratic process, it's the people themselves who are doing the damage to their country. The government was elected by the same process that has been in place since U.S. became a country. But now the losers are fighting against everything the government does, demeaning the people who elected the Republicans, protesting and fighting among themselves. They show no respect or consideration at all for that 'democratic process' that they are so afraid Russia is destroying. They act like a bunch of brainless fools!
Watch for the same thing to happen in Canada in the not too distant future. It is the disrespectful, belligerent, selfishness of the people who are demeaning all those who disagree with them that is splitting Canada apart.
When people can't open their mouths about their concerns without being called names, ridiculed and reviled you can look for serious trouble ahead.
In a true democracy people are free to think their own thoughts and speak their minds. It sure isn't that way here anymore!
