I will watch. This week's West Block hammered Monsef too.

As I mentioned in another thread, Maryam Monsef - a young lady with not a shred of political experience - should never ever have been placed in this position. If the PM was truly committed to electoral reform and it wasn't just some momentary lapse of judgement that had him throwing the idea out during the campaign, he would have appointed a much more seasoned member to this file.

Maryam's blow up in the House is just another indication of her utter lack of experience.

I stand corrected but she sure like to flaunt her riding as "Algonquin Territory".

Just toeing the party line, pete. This recognition of FNs has become so prevalent prior to the beginning of any meeting, gathering, get-together, party or announcement that it has become little more than a knee-jerk nod that will soon be lost amidst the ensuing hubbub.

Well someone tweeted me the questionnaire for the proposed electoral changes : MYDemocracy.ca !! OMG, it's absolutely stupid!! It's condescending to intellect and one of the most ambiguously ill written questionnaire I've ever seen. They should have let it go, the whole subject is sheer stupidity. Whatever it cost to launch this foolish thing, was a lost. I know these people are new, but my God man!

The government’s MyDemocracy.ca survey/consultation/questionnaire launched yesterday to a steady stream of criticism as the initiative does not follow the typical consultative approach. Rather than asking direct questions about public electoral preferences, there are a series of questions on “values, preferences, and priorities” that are supposedly designed to discern user preferences. The questions focus on representation, parties, and voting rules (there are several questions on electronic voting that ask if there is support even if the systems are less secure).

The initiative is being run by Vox Pop Labs and the site’s privacy policy advises that the Privacy Act and PIPEDA apply. However, dig into the policy and you learn that users that do not provide detailed demographic information – including age, gender, education, household income, profession, language, interest in politics, and postal code – will not have their responses considered as part of the study.

The specific provision states:

You do not need to provide your name to use MyDemocracy.ca. However, you will be asked to complete a profile about yourself. You may be asked to provide us with your gender, year of birth, level of education, household income, and other demographic information. The purpose for collecting this information is for Vox Pop Labs to ensure that the overall results of the study are representative of the Canadian population.

While answering the profile questions is optional, not answering these questions will result in your input not being included as part of the overall results of the study. [emphasis added]

The demographic information may or may not be personally identifiable. For Canadians in large communities, it may be difficult to identify a particular person. For those from smaller communities, the combination of postal code, profession, education, gender, age, language, and possible identification with certain groups could be enough to identify a specific person. Regardless, it is inappropriate for a government-backed consultation to require Canadians to provide detailed demographic information in order for their opinions to actually count.

Michael Chong proposes a different sort of Reform and that is the reforming of how all Parties operate within the system. I've read what he proposes and I'm thinking he's on to something. If the changes he proposes were to be done, we wouldn't require any other "electoral" reform as far as I can see. I'm not sure how to "link" what he has but I'm sure if you google it, you'll find it.

Simply put, there is no defense for the electoral reform survey as it is a complete waste of time.
Trudeau, Monsef and the Liberals have proven themselves absolutely untrustworthy on this file, and nothing they do know should restore any of that trust.
Face it, they set up the Committee to consult Canadians. The Committee did so, and Canadians said they wanted two things: proportional representation and a referendum between any proposal and the status quo (FPTP)
Neither of those things were what the Liberals wanted, so Monsef went off the rails in the House......proving the paranoid among were correct: the Liberals are scum, and will settle for nothing but STV with no referendum, as they believe it will make them the Natural Governing Party for real and forever.
So, the survey is either simply another fraudulent method to fake non-existent support for Liberals' dream of a de facto one party state, or it is a complete waste of money.
In either case, it is indefensible.

It cost us taxpayers $250,000, Rem.

The survey is an utter waste of a quarter of a million dollars - no ifs, ands or buts about it, Colpy. After reading that some folks were taking the survey a second time, I went back and took again too. The only thing I changed was the postal code. Given that, how is one to believe the results?

Well folks, I got my post card from the government today. I was wondering exactly how they were going to cover all the questions about electoral reform on one post card. I needn't have - they aren't. In both official languages it asks that we participate by going to the Democracy.ca website. That's it. Not a single question.

How much did it cost us taxpayers to send out these millions of cards? I was angry about how the government has been handling the electoral reform file, now I am beyond furious. What a frickin' waste of money.
