The unbearable smugness of the press

The mood in the Washington press corps is bleak, and deservedly so.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that, with a few exceptions, we were all tacitly or explicitly #WithHer, which has led to a certain anguish in the face of Donald Trump’s victory. More than that and more importantly, we also missed the story, after having spent months mocking the people who had a better sense of what was going on.

This is all symptomatic of modern journalism’s great moral and intellectual failing: its unbearable smugness. Had Hillary Clinton won, there’s be a winking “we did it” feeling in the press, a sense that we were brave and called Trump a liar and saved the republic.

So much for that. The audience for our glib analysis and contempt for much of the electorate, it turned out, was rather limited. This was particularly true when it came to voters, the ones who turned out by the millions to deliver not only a rebuke to the political system but also the people who cover it. Trump knew what he was doing when he invited his crowds to jeer and hiss the reporters covering him. They hate us, and have for some time.

And can you blame them? Journalists love mocking Trump supporters. We insult their appearances. We dismiss them as racists and sexists. We emote on Twitter about how this or that comment or policy makes us feel one way or the other, and yet we reject their feelings as invalid.

It’s a profound failure of empathy in the service of endless posturing. There’s been some sympathy from the press, sure: the dispatches from “heroin country” that read like reports from colonial administrators checking in on the natives. But much of that starts from the assumption that Trump voters are backward, and that it’s our duty to catalogue and ultimately reverse that backwardness. What can we do to get these people to stop worshiping their false god and accept our gospel?

We diagnose them as racists in the way Dark Age clerics confused medical problems with demonic possession. Journalists, at our worst, see ourselves as a priestly caste. We believe we not only have access to the indisputable facts, but also a greater truth, a system of beliefs divined from an advanced understanding of justice.

You’d think that Trump’s victory – the one we all discounted too far in advance – would lead to a certain newfound humility in the political press. But of course that’s not how it works. To us, speaking broadly, our diagnosis was still basically correct. The demons were just stronger than we realized.

This is all a “whitelash,” you see. Trump voters are racist and sexist, so there must be more racists and sexists than we realized. Tuesday night’s outcome was not a logic-driven rejection of a deeply flawed candidate named Clinton; no, it was a primal scream against fairness, equality, and progress. Let the new tantrums commence!

Commentary: The unbearable smugness of the press - CBS News

The country and world as a whole would be better served without these trolls. Thankfully more and more people are finding superior sources and higher quality reporting and journalism elsewhere.

I have often reccomended correcting the fifth estate perhaps this election highlights some of the problems. These journalists are not as objective as they might be, a little regulation is in order. They better get thier facts straight or watch thier fat backs, bullshjt for news won't do any longer. Get the facts straight or we'll get you straight on racks.

If a few of them faced the firing squad for bullshjiting the people the rest would get the idea I bet.

Report the facts, we will analyze them, you are just an eyeball and an ear and nothing else you don't make the news you report it, or else. Every proven bullshjt story should earn time in the rock quarries and on the oars.

Under performing journalists should be burned at the stake every thankgiving. The news would be accurate and trustworthy in no time.

I think we saw an evolution of reporting that hopefully will self-correct. There is news reporting and, separate from that, editorializing. The two co-exist, but don't mix. When you blend the two, you are consciously attempting to influence your audience, not record what is happening. Put bluntly, that isn't right.

And here is something that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere. When pollsters "advise" that one party or person is ahead in the standings, is that the truth, or is it another way of attempting to influence the audience? A small percentage of people will vote according to who seems to be ahead in the polls. Tell them Candidate A is ahead and that will snag some votes - undecided or lemmings.

We found out that CNN was working for Clinton. Why not the polling companies?

LOL. I'm reminded of all the celebrations that took place when Bush was re-elected after the Swift Boating by Fox and others in the right wing media. The celebration was short lived because the Great Recession started soon thereafter. While I believe in giving everybody a chance to prove their worth (Trump included) don't be too surprised if another recession takes place when his policies are put into place. We shall see how much smug like celebrations takes place after that.

Swift Boating by the men who served under him. That stuck Kerry hard!

And Dan Rather got canned for trying to Swift Boat Bush and lost his job because it was a stack of lies by the left wing media.

FAIL

You're a lefty and Trump's economic policies are further left than Obama's. You should be happy

... says the guy that quotes The National Enquirer

You know I'm not a lefty.

But you do have a point that has been made by some in other forums - the fact that Trump has been a political lefty all his life. That is up to now. He was pro abortion, he endorsed certain lefty conspiracy theories, he was always against special tax breaks for elites, and is a big fan of free trade (something I have always condemned).

Eagle and the National Enquirer - 'nuff said.

I and others told you for years, told some of you drones during this election cycle...even that greasy sweaty michael moore told the progs...

but that aside because some morons never read anything of substance  let's continue with this effort by msnbc and it's post-mortem of Mr. Trumps yuge victory over them, their buddies and hildebeast:

back to the proggy media and their captive cucky audience (many of whom dwell in this forum):

couple of nice comments:

Just after the 9 minute mark:
If Trump had lost, would the media have cared about the disappointment of his supporters?

The reaction of Hillary's supporters reminds me of the people still fighting Brexit. A democratic vote is no longer valid to the leftists which makes me think they would be much happier living in Russia. They're going to be very happy when we eventually do have a one-world government. Soros knows them well and can wait a bit longer.

I don't understand the love affair with Hillary. What is it about her that people should be crying? But, then, if I think about it. What if a Conservative (leader unknown) wins the next election and Trudeau's supporters throw the same hissy fit?

These progressive partisans masquerading as the media can't even pretend to be objective. Their outrage at their failure to take Trump seriously was premised on a lost potential to ensure Hillary's success. I didn't hear one of them question the quality of their candidate or her policies. They presupposed her to be omniscient (talk about an inverted sense of morality). This isn't anything resembling news or journalism, simply a Democratic party strategy post-mortem.

this is called yellow journalism

When Hearst Artist Frederic Remington, cabled from Cuba in 1897 that "there will be no war," William Randolph Hearst cabled back: "You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war."

I can't imagine why the US news media would be unhappy with the election, after all the Dumpster is going to provide it with excellent copy for as long as he lasts as president.
