After six decades, the town of Tisdale, Saskatchewan is no longer officially known as the "Land of Rape and Honey." Instead, the north-central community is declaring that "Opportunity Grows Here."
Town officials voted unanimously last October to change the dated slogan. On Monday, the town unveiled its new slogan.
"Our survey, our focus groups and the advice that we received from industry experts indicated it was time for an update," said Tisdale director of economic development Sean Wallace in a statement.
"Having a brand that is modern, unique and conveys an easily-understood message is paramount in today's competitive environment."
The “Land of Rape and Honey” slogan referred to the rapeseed crops grown in the area. The second part of the slogan likely comes from Tisdale’s 16-foot roadside statue of 'The World’s Largest Honey Bee.' Still, the town office would regularly have to deal with complaints from those misinterpreting the slogan.
According to a statement, the new slogan "is an evolution that recognizes the community's future aspirations while acknowledging Tisdale's agricultural tradition and expertise."
Tisdale, with a population of around 3,200 people, is located about 210 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
In honour of the town of Tisdale officially changing, after six decades, its official slogan from "The Land of Rape and Honey" to "Opportunity Grows Here," here are a few other notable town slogans:
Hooker, Oklahoma – ‘It’s a Location, Not a Vocation’
Hutt Valley, New Zealand – ‘Right Up My Hutt Valley’
Okotoks, Alberta. – ‘There are a number of things to do in Okotoks’
La Crosse, Kansas – ‘Barbed Wire Capital of the World
Strong, Maine – ‘Toothpick Capital of the World’
Cheshire, Connecticut – ‘Bedding Plant Capital of Connecticut’
Linesville, Pennsylvania – ‘Where The Ducks Walk on Fish’
Beaver, Oklahoma – ‘Cow Chip Capital’
Dumas, Arkansas – ‘Home of the Ding Dong Daddy’
Bushnell, South Dakota – ‘It’s Not The End of the Earth But You Can See It From Here’
Gas, Kansas – ‘Don’t Pass Gas. Stop and Enjoy It.”

More like an acknowledgement that city people are getting stupider.

Would've been more appropriate to quote his "rape can be funny" routine, no?

And I only bring it up because it's not often one can work that into a post. :D

Our survey, our focus groups and the advice that we received from industry experts

What a waste of money. Am I the only one concerned there are 'industry experts' on town slogans? Maybe this is why the world is going to sh^t...just saying.
