It will be interesting to see if this fades away or blows up like the last time. You know the press will be after Justin for a headline maker..

Well, unless there are some radical changes made, every nickel spent on Duffy's trial is just money pissed down the drain!

The question is, will Canadians continue to blame Harper, should a second trial occur?

Canadians blamed Harper for appointing Duffy.
Canadians blamed Harper for letting the RCMP investigate and make their recommendations.
Canadians accused the Conservatives of abandoning Duffy.
Canadians blamed Harper for the Senate's rules about expenses.

The trouble is, the Senate makes their own rules, so Harper, and possibly Trudeau, shouldn't wear any of it, but they always do. Canadians have to blame someone. The PM is an easy target.

The Conservatives won't worry if Canadians continue to blame Harper for Duffy's troubles though. They aren't in power and the smell will go away after a few months. Justin's team however, will be burning the midnight oil to make sure their government doesn't step in anything that might stick and stink.

It is truly unfortunate that the Senate is allowed to make their own rules. These guys are not elected but appointed. It is in their own self-interest to keep the rules as vague as possible so it benefits them. I'm not sure how we can go about changing things but the Senate needs to be accountable and parliament needs to ensure that the rules are clear, concise and understandable to the Canadian population so that it is understood that any reimbursements are legitimate. As it stands now, this Duffy/Wallin catastrophe has made Canadians doubt the legitimacy of any expenses incurred.

I still don't understand how the residency issue has run amuck - if he lived in Ontario prior to his appointment (for decades) how could he possibly claim that PEI was his "primary home"? How vague must the rules be that claiming Ontario to be his "second" home is so absurd which is why Canadians are so upset. My husband was born in Vancouver and has lived in many Provinces and now resides in Alberta. How could he possibly say that "Vancouver" is his primary home after living in Alberta for over 20 years?

Guess I must be dumb or something because it's pretty straight forward to me, but obviously, according to the "judge" I'm "misunderstanding" the concept.

Senators are required to "live" (have a home) in the province they represent. That way all the time they spend in Ottawa is on the taxpayer's dime. They are also entitled to a certain number of round trip tickets "home"

Any one know how many weeks a year (on average) a senator spends in Ottawa?
