What Earls dropping Alberta beef says about Alberta

This new anti-Earls campaign actually reminds me more of a much earlier decision Tim Hortons made to shake-up its business model.

In the 1980s, Tim Hortons made the decision to go smoke-free.

At that time, the writing was on the wall, and it was just a matter of time before the law was going to require all restaurants to be smoke-free. But Tim Hortons made a calculated decision to make this switch long before they had to.

At that time, a typical Tims was a very smoky establishment, and its most loyal customers were people who couldn't fathom the idea of not having a cigarette with their coffee and donut.

Many people were convinced Tim Hortons would be out of business in a year. After all, how could a business alienate its most loyal customers and expect to remain open?

What Tim Hortons realized was that for every smoker occupying a stool at the counter, there were three non-smokers avoiding Tim Hortons because they couldn't stand the second-hand smoke.

The world was changing, and Tim Hortons accurately anticipated the change. This set the stage for the market domination Tim Hortons enjoys today..

A member of the Board of Directors of Alberta's Progressive Conservatives has levelled an accusation against Earls restaurants, an "upscale casual dining" chain based in Vancouver.

He claims the restaurant chain "supports terrorists."

Craig Chandler, who was acclaimed as the Alberta Tories' regional director for Calgary earlier this month, made those comments in the wake of an online backlash – with some conservative politicians leading the charge – after the restaurant chain decided to switch to beef raised without the use of antibiotics, hormones or steroids.

Only problem? Earls says they couldn't find a supplier in Alberta "to meet the volume we use," so they switched to a U.S. supplier. They say they're willing to switch back to Canadian beef if they can find a supplier that meets their needs.

But that might not be good enough for Chandler, who has previously vied for the leadership of both the federal and Alberta PCs.

After learning that Earls' supplier also offers a separate line of halal certified meat, Chandler took to the Earls restaurants Facebook page to claim the chain is supporting terrorists:

Following his bizarre comment, Chandler filled his Facebook feed with links to Muslim foodie blogs about the supplier's line of halal certified meats:

In a round-up of comments on the Earls restaurants backlash, Chandler's comment was cited as an example of "racists" who are raging against Earls restaurant for supposedly supporting "Jihad fighters" and "barbaric" culinary practices:

It’s feel good nonsense for people who feel guilty about their comfortable urban lives.

An Open Letter To Anyone Who Will Listen:

Many of you will already know that over the last three years Earls has been a huge part of my life, at one time allowing me to pursue my passion for photography. During this period I have met a ton of amazing people, many who I now consider good friends and even family. The intention of this post is NOT to state my opinion or upset anyone but simply make a plea.

That plea being that no matter what your opinion is on our beef program or really any other subject, that you take a minute to think about who you're voicing your concerns or opinions to and the way in which you're going about it.

I'm a strong believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but over the last couple of days I have seen far too many people that I care about who work for Earls be yelled at or degraded for something that is much bigger than them.

Today I was yelled at in a public parking lot and then ridiculed at the gas station just for wearing my chef's jacket with the Earls logo, something by the way which I am very proud to wear.

All I ask is that before you yell at a 16 year old hostess or tell a server that they're are stupid you take a moment to consider the big picture.

We're all human and most of us are in the industry we're in because we love people! For those who have any questions or concerns about this I'm always more than happy to answer them, feel free to message me!

Yup.

It was only a matter of time before one of these imbeciles opened their mouth about it.

Don't you just love it when conbots support protectionism.

It's as if they don't really understand anything at all.

I saw a piece on Marketplace about Earl's a month or so ago. They don't treat their waiters/waitresses too well. Can't recall the exact details right now. There were 3 or 4 other restaurants in the same boat. Where they get their beef is likely the least of their problems now!

So maybe it was more of a PR move, "Look at us, we care about our customers", but they misjudged the potential backlash involved in passing up Canadian product for American.
