He was originally charged with Treason but to insure a conviction the charge was changed to espionage.

Here are the charges against Manning. Please note that they are all charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. If any of the charges were not under the UCMJ, Manning could not have been tried by court-martial, because courts-martial only have jurisdiction under the UCMJ. There is no article of treason in the UCMJ.
