Carbon tax in Alberta should rise 70 per cent, report says

Jacking up Alberta's carbon tax is the best way to reduce the province's greenhouse gas emissions from power generation, says a government-funded analysis obtained by The Canadian Press.

Charging large emitters up to $50 a tonne for carbon emissions — an almost 70 per cent increase — would produce the best result, says the report by an international economic consultancy.

But that price would also raise electricity costs more than any other option considered, the Brattle Group concludes.

The study, which has not been released publicly, was delivered to the province's Energy Ministry and electrical regulator in July 2014, before the last provincial election.

It is now before a panel charged with designing an overall climate-change policy for Alberta in advance of talks in Paris this December.

I've heard BC carbon taxes touted as a success. Yes fuel purchased in BC has dropped but it did nothing for emissions. Day trips to Washington State have skyrocketed with gasoline being the purpose of the trip. Out of Province tourism has taken a huge hit right along with service industries that cater to tourists.

All businesses are paying more which stagnates wages and hiring. It costs consumers more to acquire necessities that are sourced from in and out of Province.

If you think the low income earners who turn in their receipts for a rebate are breaking even you are super high.

All the necessities of life cost more with food being to biggest. BC grown fruits and vegetables are 20% cheaper in SK than BC for f-ck sakes. That reflects directly to the capitals cost increases retailers are feeling.

When fuel is bought from the US, there is no reduction in emissions. When tourists are burning fuel to travel somewhere there is no reduction in emissions.

There are no fewer vehicles on the antique BC roadways only more everyday and people are still driving the same amount, heavy equipment is still burning the same amount of fuel and weed growers are burning the same amount of diesel in their generators.

The only reduction in emissions thanks to carbon taxes in BC is how the carbon taxes came into being. Harper and the ActionPlan is why BC now has a carbon tax.

BC would never be able to pay for it's share in the massive infrastructure projects involved in the Asia Pacific Gateway. The two lane piece of sh-t freeway in Vancouver is still a piece of sh-t but has a shiny new and far under used HIV lane and all new or rebuilt bridges and over passes that were deemed unsafe or didn't meet earthquake building codes.

The entire emissions angle is a scam the same one in Ontario would be. It won't lower emissions at all.
