Harper pledges enhanced tax credit for northern mining projects

Canada's resource sector has taken major hit from plummeting commodities prices

A re-elected Conservative government would continue to provide tax credits aimed at encouraging mineral exploration, particularly in northern communities, party leader Stephen Harper announced today.

Speaking to a group of supporters in North Bay, Ont., Harper said the 15 per cent Mineral Exploration Tax Credit — created in 2006 — would be extended for at least another three years if he returns as prime minister.

He added that an enhanced credit would be offered to proposed projects facing steep overhead costs due to remote locations and distance from transportation routes. Projects like the Ring of Fire in northern Ontario or Plan Nord in Quebec would qualify for the 25 per cent tax credit.

The total cost of the extended credit and the enhanced one would be $60 million a year beginning in 2016-17.

"Having riches below the ground does not in and of itself guarantee prosperity above," Harper said, stressing the need to move ahead with resource development projects that face considerable logistical challenges.

There was actually no mention of any difference in that article.

Do you think that matters to those smoked by trains or logging trucks? They seem to think it's okay to work under the table and stiff the rest of us on taxes then bitch like little girls about how the pot they never kicked into is managed.

Complete and total f-cking hypocrite a$sholes

You're such an angry curmudgeon.

Oil gets flow through and other tax breaks like not paying enough for the oil
they get. However there needs to be a balance the heritage fund needs a
renewal and that means more money is required from those making the
money

Northern Ontario,

.
The article said that there is no difference to liberals unless it applies to one of their projects...
The difference is a tax break you don't get any cash...you just don't pay so much tax on the income from a project that eg. creates employment.
A subsidy is money up front.
If you can't see that you're definitely a liberal and blind as a bat!

So any tax credit to any business is a subsidy or just oil? What are subsidies called in your world?

If Mulcair offered up a tax credit to cover daycare would that be subsidized daycare?

Is the 100% tax credit for hardware to set up a server in your industry a subsidy or a tax credit? Is the 50% 1st year, 30% 2nd year and 20% on the 3rd year tax credit on a truck or car a subsidy or a tax credit? How about a desk that is given 60% tax credit the first year followed by 20% over the next 2 year totalling 100% over 3 years a subsidized desk?

The article said that there is no difference to liberals unless it applies to one of their projects...

Nope.

Harper's housing scheme is also a subsidy.
DaSleeper, we have a very dumb man on our hands. It's obvious he earned money and didn't pay taxes or he would have taken advantage of the credits under the CRA Capital Cost Allowances and bought state of the equipment to go around dropping beats and sweet grooves Yo. He'd know the CRA CCA categories and rates inside out and backwards for his business if he were a taxpayer.

But he doesn't know how they work therefore he obviously didn't file and claim his rightful credits. He owes you me and 36,000,000 other Canadians some money as a tax frauder. A cheat.

A quick email to CRA would open an audit on his dumbass fraudulent self.

Do you think he would understand the difference after an audit, paying fines and a couple months in the pokey yo?

To answer the only substantive thing in your post - no, subsidies obviously aren't limited to one specific market.

Northern Ontario,
Getting all salty for us again.
Yup, he's against tax breaks for companies that provide work to employees that in turn will pay more income tax in the end than the break they gave the company, and even more if you include the secondary jobs that an industry produces...
He is also against taxing UCCB, which is an outright payout to families......
Yup....real salty
I got a tax credit from the Ontario Government in '91 because I had to borrow money to buy shares in a company that was about to shut down here up north, if the employees didn't buy into it.....
But That was OK because it was an NDP government at the time
They banked on getting it back when I sold the shares at a profit later,.........and they did!
At least 5 times more than I got.....

Scrap/commodities are piling up all over the world in anticipation of war, I support the Harper Governments policy in this matter.
