Reports from other media outlets that James B. Duke Professor Jerry Hough was recently placed on leave after posting a controversial comment on a New York Times editorial are incorrect, confirmed Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations, in an email early Monday morning.

"Professor Hough is currently on a long-planned academic leave that started well before this issue came up," he wrote.

Slate reported Sunday afternoon that Hough had been placed on leave in the wake of last week's controversy, basing its report on articles Saturday by local ABC and Fox affiliates.

In an email to The Chronicle Friday night, Hough noted that he was on leave and that at 80 years old, 2016 will be his last year teaching at Duke.

His comment on an editorial about how racism led to Baltimore riots sparked by Freddie Gray's death cited his experience as a political science professor at Duke for 42 years in claiming that Asian Americans "didn't feel sorry for themselves, but worked doubly hard" to integrate effectively into American society. Much of the controversy that followed came because Hough wrote about "the blacks," who "feel sorry for themselves" because of similar editorials and have a "lack of desire for integration." The full comment can be seen here.

Jack Knight, chair of the Political Science Department and Frederick Cleaveland Professor of Law, also confirmed via email Monday morning that "Professor Hough was granted leave for the 2014-2015 academic year in accordance with standard leave policy for all faculty."

Yeah, your "solution" of having people shoot at the cops won't lead to more death and urban chaos.

Imbecile.

Horseshtt, moron.

People have a right to defend themselves as you well know if you are the lawyer you claim to be.

Even today Obama has issued an executive order to limit police access to high powered weaponry because of the hazards it creates for society. By contrast, did you see any such police violence in Houston when the Black Panthers made a show of strength with rifles? Of course not. Not one person was killed, no stores were looted, and no police cars were burned. Their use of weapons preserved the peace on Houston's streets. This is what is needed throughout the USA. Anyone who professes to believe in limited government and in Second Amendment rights will agree.

Nice Boomster shot. Are you completely sure that's the person you want to pick as your role model? Because you're headed in the right direction. That people have the right to defend themselves does not refute the statement that people shooting at the cops will lead to death and chaos.

Argument by anecdote, and declaring that anyone who disagrees with you can't be legitimate.

Yep, you're doing that Boomster thing well. Maybe you did pick the right role model.

I find it interesting that you claim to be a lawyer but in all the time you've been here, I don't think you have ever won so much as one single debate.

I've had my disagreements with the likes of Boomster, Eagle, Colpy, and others but one thing they have which you don't is the fact that they back up their claims with at least some measure of proof. Don't always agree with them but certainly respect their right to their opinion.

In this case here, you make a claim but offer no proof that any of it is true.

So let's look again - unarmed blacks stage a protest in Ferguson or Baltimore and what happens?

Agent provocateurs infiltrate the groups and violence starts - people are injured, property is destroyed, and all kinds of mayhem occurs.

By contrast, armed Black Panthers mount a vociferous protest against police stupidity and institutional racism.

How many cars are overturned?
How many stores are looted?
How many police cars are set on fire?
How many agent provocateurs incite violence?
How many blacks are injured?
How many cops are injured?
What is the total cost in property damage?

The answer to all is ZERO.

Same thing that happened in Nevada.

Why? Because cops will not dare start anything if they see that people are armed.

Therefore, contrary to your delusionalism, our Founding Fathers were correct - it is an armed citizenry that is protected from government abuse. That is why they gave us the Second Amendment.

Want to see an end to government incited violence of any kind? Arm the citizenry in accordance with the Constitution.

That is so kool!

Big fan of the Howitzer, myself. In fact, I said a long while ago the citizenry should have several in every armory all set up and ready to go. And it would be in accordance with what our Founders wanted as the Battle of Lexington & Concord was about just that.

Alarming Surge In Murders And Shootings In Baltimore - CBS Baltimore

City crime spike. A dramatic increase in violence in Baltimore. Dozens of shooting and murders in the last few weeks following the riots last month.

Why bother, let them kill themselves off.. beats getting arrested for doing your job.

Not many folks can talk-the-talk like T-Bones. You may disagree with his position(s), but I'd be very willing to bet against anyone that states that he isn't what he says he is (or something very similar).

In terms of debating, those discussions are won or lost on facts... Referencing agent provocateurs without any tangible proof is supposition at best and bordering more on tin foil hat conspiracy theory

Northern Ontario,
Real lawyers don't advertise all the time"I'm a lawyer you know" like those two comediennes a few years back....or I'm a poor Injun and that's why I hate the church....
Some years back I was at a campground for a whole week pickin' and jammin' with this neighbor, before I found out he was not only a lawyer but a Judge, and the only reason I found out is that he had a visitor that had business with him and he had to put away is guitar to go and handle it in his motorhome.. and it never came up again at the local festival where I met him a few times after....

Click on search where an agent provocateur was caught red handed on video and openly admitted to being one after he arrested a protester (I believe that took place in Oakland). That was a genuine news FACT, not tin foil as you (or he) may want to believe.

I find it completely uninteresting that you think cramming a finger up your nose and saying "You ain't really a lawyer!" constitutes "winning a debate."

It'd be sad if it wasn't so funny, in a laugh-at-the-disabled kinda way.
