It is not a question of just stopping budget cuts at CBC where there appears to this observer to be a lot of malaise and incompetence mixed in with flashes of brilliance that are evinced by some employees. What the CBC seems to need is an independent overall headed by a respected competent person and followed by a budget review

Yup, and then once the budget review is done, slash it to zero and sell it to the highest bidder or shut it down.

CBC has a lot of original Canadian programming not just the news like the other American clone Canadian broadcasters. This is why Taxpayer money is so important.

Too bad that a lot of that 'original programming' is shyte

yeah, especially the 47 variations of sexual orientations that's aired several times a day! :)

Having said that there is quite a lot of good stuff..............like "Quirks and quarks" and "The Current" & of course "Cross Country Checkup" with Rex Murphy!

If the programming is good enough, people will watch and advertisers will pay. Taxpayer funding will not be required. However, if the stuff they put up is crap, people won't watch and why should we pay for that?

HBO and AMC have some pretty good original programming as well. CBC is a make-work, cancon captive audience manufactured deal. If it can stand on it's own against competition, let it. Otherwise, too bad so sad.

What makes CBC so good is that the context of it's stories is not driven by profit.

You can see how the private industry is meant for appeasement or ratings, and the failure of something like Sun News is primarily because the audience in Canada (the stupid people) just isn't there like it is in the states.

Well, if there are so many 'smart' people, CBC should have no problem making a profit off its programs or at least break even and not require government subsidies.

Sure it is.. All the hangers-on that rely on making their living by selling their garbage to the Canadian taxpayer via the CBC

That is a remarkably twisted form of logic that attempts justify uninteresting, unprofessional and unpopular programming that is much of the 'original programming' by the CBC

Or they can report accurately regardless of ratings, which is one of the benefits of public broadcasting.

Or you can believe the doof above me who thinks the popular opinion is the best one.

That's why he listens to the beeb's every day.

Yea, that's exactly what I said.

The budget should match the ability for them to continue providing critical journalism.

If that is compromised because of cuts, then we need to make sure that budget is met.

And that's where you neocons should start instead of just regurgitating respec for da taxpayer fallacy.

Trouble is CBC does not always report accurately. And other than the news the programing is pure trash.
