I spent twelve years in service, Eagle. Never, ever in that time did I see a situation where anybody's job, life, or safety depended on doing a pushup. You never understood how strength and speed is/was a qualification for soldiers or Marines?
All valid points. But equally valid is attempting to deal with whatever causes an organisation to be a boys' club (or a club of any other sort). That increases the pool of quality candidates.Back in the 90s the LIberal government looked at the numbers in the military and decided the Military were woefully short of women and not a very inclusive bunch. Sure there were lots of females in the support trades such as clerks, transport and medics. Hell, there were even Intelligence Operators, Engineers and Mechanics but in the combat arms of Infantry, Armoured and Artillery there were virtually none particularly in the non commissioned ranks (non officers) .
The government as some of you might recall, began an ambitious recruiting drive targeting women specifically for combat arms. They spent 24 million over three years and recruited a total of 23 females. I do not know the exact figure but I believe only three girls remained in the military when their terms of service expired after three years.
To find these girls the military spent more than a million per gal and in the end it didn't work out like the military and government WOGs thought it would. You see, it is hard enough to find and retain old fashioned tough guys to perform such awful work in such terrible conditions let alone women. I wonder if the RCMP lifestyle of moving from town to town or dealing with bad guys everyday doesn't appeal to women the way it might to men?

Contrary to what Eagle seems to think, I'm not saying physical performance standards are wrong, or irrelevant. I'm saying pushups are irrelevant. It's not the push up that's essential. It's the upper body strength it gives that's needed. To bad yoga and pilates weren't used...or maybe it is now.
Sort of like how you may not ever use algebra in real life, but you will use the skill needed for algebra in other facets of life.
The black guy might have had a better education and CV to begin with.

For example, my local fire department's physical fitness test is humping a 150-lb. (69kg) hose up five floors five times. That is what I call realistic testing.

You're so oppressed. I can't imagine how you find the strength to endure. The LPGA requires one to have a vag in order to get in. My Gawd!! The inhumanity we inflict on each other.
Yup. So would weight lifting, core strength training, and aerobics. Doesn't change the fact that firefighters don't need to do pushups to fight fires. But they do need to hump hoses up stairs.Yep, motion helps build strength and stamina both of which could come in handy when you're dodging bullets in the trenches!
For the guy who's still "green" wouldn't push ups give him a head start for these other feats?

Typical of our government to set quotas based on anything other than ability. When I worked for DND they were more interested in my non status native identification than mechanical abilities. Somehow that made me more qualified to fix firetrucks and fueltrucks than all the training and experience I have.
