Nova Scotia Bans Fracking..........Again

Petros you are right we are burning fracked fuel. That is not the problem I am talking about
what damage may or may not occur where the fracking is done. Water contamination etc.
Long term damage has not been determined We don't even know if there is long term
damage. For that reason I don't think we should just stop doing it, we should however do a
monitoring of specific rock formation areas to determine if we have a problem
All too often we just shut something down and usually its because the process is not well
explained.
I for one used to be totally against the Tar sands project but now if the right steps are being
taken it may well have a future. Germany mines coal moves everything in the mines path
then puts it back and cleans up if that is done in this case and the land is rehabilitated what
is the problem? As I see it the problem is the companies have a lousy track record and the
people don't believe them the only answer shut it all down That is not a solution either as
we need the energy What is needed is honesty and well thought out solutions well explained
if mainstream society understands what's happening the fringe does not gain traction.

Petros the people in the North East corner are not even united and the large
part of the Province is opposed. They are opposed to the Norther Gateway
as well. I am not opposed merely opposed to the company that is going to
operate it and Kinder Morgan I think most reluctantly support a second line.
In large measure the people of BC are fundamentally opposed to Fracking.
I like I said am reluctant until I see a measured area and what it did or did not
do. I am not out of hand opposed though.
BC is a place where not only environmentalists are opposed it cuts across
societies margins. If Northern Gateway gets off the ground Harper could have
serious voting problems. There is also a developing opinion BC Ports are
BC territory and that is not good either. Fracking is going to be a huge issue
in BC unfortunately it will be polarized who's side are you on attitude and
governments know that
Right now I think some should be done but not wholesale fracking

BCs piece of the Prairie is small and has been producing for a long long time. If there were issues there shouldn't be any problem digging some up. Give it a shot.

This is not a culture of we'd rather be on welfare. They are the ones doing a large part of the
work in Alberta and elsewhere. They don't want it because the people don't want it and they
have gas drilling going on off the coast. There are those who are not willing to just give in to
what the big companies want. I don't know about fracking and whether it will do future harm.
I don't think an outright ban is the answer either cause if you do that you won't find out what
the future holds.
It should be noted Eastern Canada is much more in tune with the social agenda when ti comes
to these things. They don't want companies coming in and screwing them over like they have
for more than a century. The last time it was said "Take a chance" they got the Sydney Tar
Pond that some say will be impossible to clean up.
We may find contaminated water in the west too and maybe we won't we should experiment
but not go hog wild like we are until we know more. If there is severe damage for the future
who should pay? The Companies NOt the Government in other words you and I.
NS had a ban under the NDP and the present government and the Tories were critical now they
are coming to the same conclusion I find that interesting.

Not just the Sydney Tar Ponds, there is also Boat Harbor in Pictou Landing:

This has been going on for almost 50 years now.

I remember back in Elementary School, around 1987, a kid in my class did a presentation on Boat Harbor and showed photos of him taking a big football sized rock, tossing it into the harbor and showing another photo of that rock still floating on the surface. Driving past that place was offensive to the senses.

My wife and I got married in Pictou at my Godparent's house. We had a nice picturesque area to have the wedding and it was a beautiful day in early September.

We were lucky as the wind was blowing the right way, and the trees in the yard blocked the view of this:

While I would welcome more jobs to my home province and get the money flowing back into the place to help the population, there is a lot at stake when it comes to health, the environment and natural beauty Maritimers enjoy. It's why my grandfather moved to Nova Scotia from Quebec


When it comes to the fracking and offshore drilling, etc.... one of the main reasons why there is opposition in Nova Scotia is directly because of the the long history of the ocean and fishing in much of the Province. There are attempts to try and bring back the Cod and others.... I can understand the opposition to anything that may risk that.

Because that's how it works. The same way a water well is safe if done properly. It's been going on since before you were born or hatched or whatever.
