I support the Obama approach on tjhe Islamic State. Help out the Kurds, intervene directly in dire humanitarian situations. Otherwise let it go. What do you want to do, Colpy? Join forces with Assad, the way the US did with Saddam? How'd that work out? There's no one to back in that fight. The borders of Iraq and Syria were drawn by WWI European potentates with little appreciation for the long and bloody sectarian feuds in the area, particualrly between the Sunnis and the Shi'ites, who, for all their hysteria against the evil west, still hate each other more than anyone else.
This is a seismic upheaval. Two tectonic plates that have built up massive pressure that are now coming back to equilibrium in a convulsion of violence.
As far as western interests go, Putin is the threat. The focus there should be a show of strength by NATO (primarily European NATO) and making sure not to create conditions that will send Russia and China (also natural rivals, historically) into an alliance.
