Shirtless protesters crash Rob Ford news conference, heckle Toronto mayor


TORONTO - A group of shirtless protesters crashed a news conference by Rob Ford today, heckling the Toronto mayor by shouting for him to resign.

Ford was speaking about his opposition to a transit plan but was nearly drowned out by a small but vocal group of demonstrators


The group, inspired by a shirtless jogger whose rant at Ford during a Canada Day event touched off a social media frenzy, stood around Ford and shouted that he should step down.
Ford said he wasn't bothered by the demonstrators — at one point stopping his speech to chuckle — and said "they can protest all they want."
Since Ford returned last week from two months in rehab he has given a handful of interviews, but has not taken questions from city hall journalists about the circumstances surrounding his alcohol and drug use, the company he kept and offensive remarks he has made.
At the end of today's news conference he said he would take questions on the transit proposal and answered two about that issue and one about the protesters before leaving.

I just watched it live on the news and the protester just plain looked silly repeating the same word over and over.......

Doug and Rob Ford have zero class.

They are a couple of high school drop outs born into a rich connected political family.

Neither has the ability to hold any friends of substance due to their total lack of any grace or panache. One wonders at the complete lack of actual grooming for a life their father gave them.

The maelstrom which will occur at each and every public appearance is well deserved.

By the way , The Sleeping Ant does not understand the media presence and the effect of repetition.

Maybe he slept through this as well.

It was happenstance that the person was shirtless on a real hot day. He just happened by the event whilst jogging.

I ran across John Furr awhile back as another Lefty Twitter nutbar so I wasn’t surprised he was the newest media darling Rob Ford protester:


John Furr’s shirtless protest has garnered him praise and derision. It’s not the first time the 52-year-old small business owner has been involved in politics — he recently withdrew from a Toronto District School Board race — but he certainly hopes his efforts will provoke others to act. The Star asked Furr, sitting outside Mayor Rob Ford’s office Tuesday afternoon, to shed a few more layers. (see here)


I asked Star reporter Kim Nursall if she knew of Furr hoped for Conservative minister Jim Flaherty to commit suicide before interviewing him:

Doing absolutely no homework, or at least not willing to report any of it, they played accomplice to Furr’s efforts to represent himself as someone who, as the Globe and Mail uncritically reported, “wanted to represent normal people.”

So how 'normal' is John Furr, someone who histrionically screamed at Rob Ford while the mayor was trying to explain his opposition to a proposed LRT line along Eglinton Avenue?



The blog Socialist Studies, which concerns itself with education issues, took an interest in Furr when he declared himself a candidate for the Toronto District School Board. Furr's campaign garnered virtually no support and ended quickly, however the intervening picture revealed someone who is anything but 'normal' by most people's standards.

Furr is a supporter of Ford's rival Olivia Chow, which the media that interviewed him, such as The Toronto Star, didn't bother to ask or disclose. While it did emerge that Furr ran a brief candidacy for the School Board, the mainstream media neglected to note his positions, such as that education should not teach facts but values.

The image of a weird, obsessive twitter stalker is also something that comes into focus through Socialist Studies' reporting on Furr.

I've had my own twitter encounters with Furr, when he decided to take it upon himself to make unsolicited replies to tweets of mine. Those episodes show someone who promotes the hateful slur, which Canada's Prime Minister described as "the new face of antisemitism," about Israel supposedly being an apartheid state, when all facts belie that.

In fact, Furr is someone who is either so stupid or dishonest (or both) that he tried to extrapolate an insult against the fanatical anti-Israel group "Queers Against Israeli Apartheid" as a "smear" against the entire LGBT community.

If that's what 'normal' people are like, then normal doesn't mean what it used to. But then, Toronto's mainstream media has its own definition of normal by which thinking exactly what they want you to think is a part. And if there's pertinent information which contradicts their version of normal, they obviously think it's better that you never know about it.

So basically: "when the media interviewed Furr about his protesting Rob Ford, why didn't they reveal that he opposes Rob Ford?"

I think to understand how incredibly stupid that post is, you would have to be the kind of person that would never post it.

If someone got that close to my grill, I'd feel like making him eat his protest poster. The shirtless guy in the picture looks like he is trying to breathe on the other guy. He must have just eaten a nice garlic, liver, and onion sandwich and wanted to get the guy's opionion..."Hey guy, does my breath stink? Do I need a mint?"
