Immigration Overload: More Than 1,000 Unaccompanied Children Flood Texas Border
After more than 1,000 unaccompanied children illegally entered the United States through a Texas border with Mexico, the children are being sent to an improvised emergency shelter in Nogales, Arizona. Governor Jan Brewer in Arizona responded with a heated written statement slamming the Obama administration’s enforcement policies regarding illegal immigration.
Brewer said, “I am disturbed and outraged that President Obama’s administration continues to implement this dangerous and inhumane policy, meanwhile neglecting to answer crucial questions our citizens demand and deserve.”
A spokesman for Brewer, Andrew Wilder, described how approximately 432 unaccompanied minors were sent to the makeshift Arizona facility on Friday, approximately 367 children were sent from Texas on Saturday and about 367 more children were expected to arrive on Sunday.
The emergency shelter will provide access to washing facilities, portable toilets, food and vaccinations. Officials say the facility may house up to 1,500 children. Counseling services and other recreational activities will be offered by FEMA according to customs officials.
Most of the undocumented children came from Central America where the threat of violence from drug cartels motivated many to leave their countries. Department of Homeland Security Officials in Texas say they do not have sufficient manpower or detention space to process the incredible surge of undocumented immigrants coming from Central America.
Many undocumented single parents with children are also entering the country illegally in tremendous numbers after rumors spread throughout Central America that the United States would not deport single parents with children.
According to an LA Times article by Cindy Carcamo, “The surge of families hit a peak over Memorial Day weekend, when federal officials flew at least 400 migrants in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas to Tucson to be processed by customs and Border Patrol officials in Arizona.”
