Ukraine's Tymoshenko to Run for President as 100,000 Russian Troops Near Ukraine — Naharnet

Also in Ukraine, the country's divisive opposition icon Yulia Tymoshenko completed an improbable return to politics earlier on Thursday by announcing plans to contest snap polls to replace the ousted pro-Russian president whose regime sent her to jail.
"I intend to run for president of Ukraine," the 53-year-old told reporters after gingerly walking into a press room with the help of a walking stick she uses due to chronic back pain.
The brief but dramatic announcement encapsulates the spectacular changes that have swept the economically struggling and culturally splintered ex-Soviet state of 46 million in the past few weeks.
Tymoshenko -- one of the most charismatic and outspoken leaders of Ukraine's 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution -- lost a close presidential poll to Yanukovych in 2010 after heading two pro-Western cabinets that became embroiled in internal disputes and eventually lost popular support.
Her political downfall after the 2010 vote was rapid and seemingly fatal.
Yanukovych's government quickly launched a series of criminal probes against his political rival that led to a controversial trial over Tymoshenko's role in agreeing a 2009 gas contract with Russia that many Ukrainians thought came at too high a price.
Tymoshenko was convicted in October 2011 for abuse of power and sentenced to a seven-year jail term that Western nations denounced as politically motivated.

Ukraine's 'Iron lady' Tymoshenko: Bruised but Unbowed — Naharnet

Glamorous revolutionary or calculating and corrupt? From the podium to prison and back again, Ukraine's ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko is a polarizing political figure whose steely ambition has not been swayed by the scandals that have dogged her career.
Fresh from three years in prison, the highly-divisive Tymoshenko hopes to rise again following the ouster of the man who jailed her, Viktor Yanukovych, and finally secure the presidential office for herself.
The 53-year-old declared Thursday she would take part in May 25 elections, even as she was mired in a fresh scandal over leaked telephone conversations she claims were manipulated by Moscow.
Tymoshenko made a triumphant return from jail in February on the same day that her arch-foe Yanukovych was toppled after three months of bloody street protests that left around 100 people dead.
Wan, weary and in a wheelchair due to a back injury, the heroine of the 2004 Orange Revolution was nonetheless unbowed by the experience, showing she had not lost her charisma and penchant for fiery rhetoric.
"The dictatorship has fallen," she said in a statement upon her release, later giving a tearful address to protesters on Independence Square in Kiev.
However she received a guarded reception from the crowd, many of whom have grown wary of the allegations swirling around the once-beloved opposition figure over her ties to the corrupt elite.

With this map you can see .......

the overall lay of the 3 countries.

For Kiev to remain popular the jobs will have to be in the west, currently the east is the busier place so jobs would go to Russians unless they were 'removed' ......

I do not like her either but fact is that when she was PM Ukraine did a lot better because they stole less than Yanukonvict and gang. They also did not steal whole companies , right now anyone can run but I do not think many want her in the president position and want a fundamental change but that is their decision to make or are you reversing your ideals on that ?

Not to my knowledge!
Ice, it is fresh water and in a drying world that has more value than any metal. You cannot draw lines in ice.

North pole.
Shouldn't Canada gt a small fee from everyone that uses a compass?

If the corruption charges were founded she and the one just overthrown would also belong in jail. 2/2, put them both in one cell and whatever they come up with one with look at doing the opposite. One complaint was buying gas from Russia at what was thought to be an inflated price. If that was true then the recent discount eliminated that and now the IMF has raised it 50% above the 'normal' price it will soon be impossible for the 'little farmer' to compete and they will be forced off the land and into the cities where high unemployment is a curse.

You do know there is something wrong with the bolded part of your post, ... right?? The decision they have to make is about dealing with the IMF. Crimea already gave the Ukraine the solution to the problem with political parties, hold referendums on everything, if the IMF deal is bad vote it out. Unfortunately that means taking the Russian deal that was just rejected in the armed (and violent) take-over.
Somebody who steals less but is in power longer can be worse than the one who fills his pockets right away and leaves the rest.

If language is an issue make them all official languages as far as being able to do the paperwork as it is electronic these days anyway.

I read and see what people write which makes me think at times we deserve what happens so many will wake up , the down side is that many a good person will die because of others stupidity and ignorance of not learning history.
When one talks of Russia you need to look at the not so distant past and how it came to be and I will say now that some writing here, had they lived in Russia, would have been taken out and shot in the head with no trial or explanation as to why . I hear so much ignorance about how Russia is better and more democratic than we and that is very dangerous thinking and it has happened before and the world did not like the results. Now here as it stands we are far from perfect and I do not think that any sane person would say we are perfect but to look at Putin , former KGB , with his vision of what the world should be , which is very close to Stalin's vision , and say he is a good guy is quite frankly at the least , very uninformed.

100 million people.....very large number which most of us cannot even imagine but that is how many people in the USSR were murdered by their own leader , Ukraine suffered terribly as they were treated like dogs and less.
Now you can post and write what others think and off the wall idea's but that will never change history or what is about to happen because we have now come full circle again. The choice is each of ours as to what should be done but read history it is a great teacher of what happens in the future.

NY State Restaurant Chain 'Bans' Putin

BUFFALO, New York — Mighty Taco, a Buffalo-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants, has banned President Vladimir Putin from all of the company's 23 locations in western New York.

The company known for its quirky ads announced on social media this week that effective immediately, Putin is banned from Mighty Taco for seizing Crimea from Ukraine. Mighty Taco's posting says Putin may be ordering around Crimea, but he will not be ordering a Super Mighty, one of the chain's most popular menu items.

The posting, which features a red-tinted photo of a gesticulating Putin, says he will be "welcomed back" at Mighty Taco when he stops acting like a bully and "picking on people."
