Nothing, and I mean nothing, could come close to beating an old tractor inner tube on the slopes.
3 or 4 guys on that thing provided for extra speed and momentum.... Hit a low dip in the run, or a well-crafted jump at the bottom of the run and it was like jumping off a trampoline off the back of a truck doing 40 klicks.
It's amazing that no one ever got seriously injured
yeah and they'll never wonder about the correct pronunciation either...I can't even remember which way is right anymore, I think it was a hard "a" and now it's a soft "a"

I do recall some of those playground merry-go-rounds things (and some without horizontal base plates either) that we'd get going to about 10,000 RPM...kids were being flung off hither and yon like some cartoon show man. Our own centrifuge.
