Ah, ok - hadn't heard that before. I wonder if they offer 5 cents rewards for returning the bottle.

Both brands offer a deposit on the bottle, but I believe you can only redeem them in certain locations (which aren't available in all cities or provinces). Personally, I think this is stupid. They also have a deposit on many of the plasic soda bottles and bottles of water, but they don't do me any good as I have no place to redeem them. I think you should be able to get a deposit on them no matter where you are. I think that more bottles would find their way OUT of the garbage (and then the landfills) if that was the case. Many people would rather get some money back than just simply recycle.

The only bottles they still take a deposit on are beer bottles, I think. Everything else just goes in recycling.

Unless you are in a lucky location that has redeeming stations.

I think the opposite actually, recycling is simply easier than adding another trip/errand.

As a kid I remember looking high and low for bottles and cans (beer) to bring in for deposit. With the amount of bottles that I see lying about, I could make a nice bit of coin. Plus, it would be good exercise walking around picking them up.;)

One time another boy and myself went looking for bottles and cans during a long weekend at Rondeau Park (when they still allowed it). We would go to the campsites and ask anyone if they had any empties that they didn't want. A couple of the sites wanted to keep theirs (I don't think anyone was rude to us), but a lot of sites said to go ahead and take them. One site (one that was kicked out the night before) had a torn-up tent and two cases of 24s as the only signs that anyone was there. We emptied the bottles (twist off caps, and we were way to young to even want to drink the beer) and put them in the cart (we carried a wagon/cart with us and placed the cans in a potato sack). We ended up with a total of $110 (or was it $100?) in deposit money! For kids our age, that was a fortune!!!

Even with smaller amounts, it's always nice to get a little bit of extra pocket money for basically free.:)

Play with a gragger.

Actually Jewish kids play with those during Purim which took place just a few days ago. Dunno if other kids do.
