I think this entire thread should probably be "deep sixed" as all it is, is a venue for the author to denigrate Ford.

Why protect him?

Maybe because after months and many threads dealing with the transgressions of Rob Ford, I don't see a point in using other threads on other issues entirely to keep attacking Ford. What possible connection is their between his episodes of alleged crack smoking to an ice storm that covered most of the eastern part of the country. It's just blood mindedness. I suggest anyone who doesn't like Ford not vote for him in the next election and let it go at that. People who dwell on the alleged sleaziness of Ford neglect to consider the real sleaziness of the press.

why....he set himself up to be denigrated... free speech remember....everyone here seems big on it until someone they want to protect gets targeted...then they get all personal and vile about it...thread seems alive and well to me, you keep posting... ;-)

Not really................what more needs to be said about Ford that hasn't already been said? Criticizing him for the handling of the storm is one thing, but to keep rehashing the crack episodes is getting monotonous!

seriously...I am surprised...you have posted here non-stop...threads are for discussion purposes (until people start making personal quips), I would love to see threads shut down when members begin to discuss other members or have those parts removed but we don't...

do you not see what you are suggesting as a form of censoring?

if he didn't lie about the crack use, maybe, just maybe people would go easier on him.

Boy, we have a 10 gallon can of worms here. And it all depends on what you want to accept as fact, what you want to accept as speculation and what you want to accept as Bullsh*t- LOL Possibly what I was suggesting is a form of censoring. If you say Joe Blow is an a$$hole once, that's stating an opinion which isn't a problem but after you've said Joe Blow is an a$$hole ten thousand times in other discussions, maybe it should be censored. We get admonished on here continuous when we don't stick to the topic in the O.P. so I don't see what I'm saying is any different! Have a happy Boxing Day Sal.

You have a point there, Petros, but I'm not sure how truthful it's wise to be when dealing with confrontational, sleazy media types. I think most people in the situation Ford was might handle it the same way. Tell those boys to F**K OFF.

Joe Blow at least in this case is not a forum member...thus to me Joe Blow is an open target....why should he not be....why should Ford be protected over Obama, or Harper? Ford is behaving like an azzhole, the press reported it. That does not make him an azzhole although it is seeming that way (for me) daily. Why is wrong for me to state that, once twice or fifty times.

I open threads all the time bashing lefties are you going to censor that too? Most of you on this forum are righties who continually bash Obama or anyone slightly left of middle. When threads become tiresome or we discuss certain members more than the OP I close the thread. I may wander back but I am not here to read members analysis of other's behaviour between them. It irritates me. It is allowed so thus obviously not a problem. Thus it is up to me to close the thread. I do so. In this particular thread, the discussion has been (for the most part) about Ford.

With all due respect JLM, I have seldom seen anyone on here admonished for not sticking to the topic. I confess to being one of the worst offenders of that...I wander off topic all the time chit chatting about whatever the thread OP has prompted.

And happy boxing day to you to JLM. I already hit the grocery store before the line ups so I am beyond happy already. Although the roads sucked earlier because the plows hadn't hit my area yet. :D

Rob Ford has confirmed that he was asked by city staff to declare a state of emergency so that they could access more resources, but that he refused to do so.

Following the changes that council made last month, the Deputy Mayor would assume control in a state of emergency. A slight problem they apparently couldn't address is that Ford is still the only one who can declare an emergency, and stepping aside during an emergency certainly isn't great for his reelection plans.

So, once again we have one mans ego pitted against the entire city of Toronto, and everyone else has to find a way to work around the stubborn blob.

Maybe we should just address the title of the O.P. and forget about all the other extraneous sh*t that's crept in to the thread. I think there's a possibility Ford does care about Toronto people. I also can see where Ford might have the feeling he was "stream rolled" when some of his duties were syphoned off to the deputy. I'd be pissed off myself. He's either the mayor or he's NOT the mayor. You can't suck and blow at the same time. Maybe he didn't have confidence the deputy could handle the situation. Maybe there's a whole lot of things none of us have considered.

What have the media reported that isn't true? Be specific.

What does this have to do with your refusal to accept that Ford smoked crack?

How on earth is that related to this case?

If a damn video of him smoking crack and an admission from Ford are not enough to make you accept what happened, what could?

The media first got the story from viewing the video of him smoking crack, though at this point we also have his admission, so where exactly are you seeing holes in this?

It is not a semantics issue, it is a legal issue. Declaring a state of emergency allows provincial staff to release a lot more resources and funding. The deputy city manager explains what those resources are in that quote.

His refusal meant that the Premier had to step in and work around him to get Toronto some extra help the next day. The extra resources could have been mobilized earlier if he just declared the emergency. We still may lose out on the funding that comes with a state of emergency though, so that could hit us taxpayers.

SO in other words there was no need for the mayor to declare a state of emergency and have is political enemies take some more of his authority away because the needed services got delivered. Kind of puts you in the position of shill for the entitled leftys that have been mismanaging Toronto prior to Ford.

Services were delivered? Is that why some are still without power? Would declaring an emergency sped anything up? Probably not.Do you known what would be different if one were called?

There was a need. City and provincial staff needed the declaration in order to provide these extra resources.

We are lucky that the premier stepped in the next day to provide a way to work around Ford, but that is in no way a credit to the selfish decision that Ford made on Sunday.

I'm through "debating" with you, you are just too thick, I've told you a dozen times I don't KNOW whether or not Ford smoked crack, it's got nothing to do with my refusal to accept it. Whatever the truth is it is but just because someone says so doesn't make it the truth. How important is it whether or not Ford smoked crack? Anyway if you keep pissing me off I'm going to turn in to someone like Gerry and I don't want to be like that. So just let go of it.

Apparently very important to you. You are the one who brought up that you doubt the fact that he smoked crack, and you are the one who has defended that point for like 20 posts now.

If you just take a step back and look at the facts objectively, there is no doubt. I have asked you for specific holes you see in the story, and all you have come back with are a few things that are simply wrong, and a pile of folksy sayings that have nothing to do with this.

The title of the thread is an allusion to the funny comments made by Kanye West about George Bush's handling of Katrina.

I really don't care how Ford personally feels about his situation as mayor. Anyone with the tiniest amount of respect for the job and respect for themselves would have stepped down and gotten themselves help long ago. Nobody created this stupid situation other than Ford himself.

It would be absolutely despicable if he is making decisions in a crisis based on his personal grudges with people.

What extra resources might they have been?

“We are getting ready to ask the mayor to declare this an emergency largely because it will assist the staff at the province to make resources available to us — crews, generators, facilities for warming centres,” said Deputy City Manager John Livey.

Lol, it was you who rehashed it, and you are very actively defending your point of view on it.

Wow they were getting ready to ask the mayor only after going to the deputy mayor and finding that he didn't have authority despite their cope. Why do you always leave that part out ?

Wouldn't the Province need the Province's resources for the rest of the Province?

Declaring an emergency gives the city the ability to offload the costs on the Province and the Feds.

From Ford's angle it makes it look like too many services were axed and that the city is incapable of handling something as simple as winter.
