The Christian faith preaches tolerance, and reward or punishment in the next life.

Islam teaches jihad.

You are correct about Muslim Spain......but that was 600 years ago, and Islam has done nothing but slide backwards in that time, while the Christian world advanced by leaps and bounds.

The Christian Faith teaches love, not just tolerance. There is a difference.

As for Islam, every Surah but one begins with 'In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful'.

I totally agree with you that Islam as a religion has gone downhill, but that is not the fault of Islam itself but rather how Muslims themselves have slid in their Faith.

Oh please circumcision is nothing like FMG. It would be if they whacked off the boys testicles and chopped part of his ***** off while they were at it, so that when he defecated he would be prone to nasty infections, same if he was able to give birth. Can a circumcised man still enjoy sex the women can't (in fact probably really dreads it) and again there is the huge risk of infection especially after she is first penetrated if she is basically sewn shut so she could brag about how tiny she is. both inner and outer labia are more often than not sliced off as well if the girl survives the infection from that procedure that her grandmother or some witch doctor performed. Learn something about FMG before you try to tell me about how poor boys are mutilated!

So would you support FGM if it was just removal of the clitoral hood then? That would be the anatomical equivalent.

For males it's no different. Loss of the best parts is loss of the best parts.

Even that is not the same, otherwise why do circumcised men still have sex?

Maybe circumcised women have sex. I think the problem is more with the ones that have had their clitoris removed, or their labia cut off, etc. Horrendous practice. I just don't see the point of subjecting infants to painful, medically unnecessary multiation of their genitals, male or female. Let them do it when thy're older, if they are that way inclined. Piercing seems more popular than snipping these days.

Infant circumcision is religiocultural and cosmetic. In Austrailia only 15% of male balies are circumcised whereas in the USA, 47% are. The practice should be limited to adults only and through informed choice.

Surely, it wouldn't be painful, my Son. After all, would parents subject their newborns to a painful and unnecessary procedure?

List them.

The Canadian Pediatric Society for one.

Neonatal circumcision revisited | Position statements and practice points | Canadian Paediatric Society

The American Academy of Pediatrics for another (as cited in the article)

I haven't verified all of these myself, but a quick list from an intactivist site...

Royal Australasian College of Physicians
British Medical Association
Royal Dutch Medical Society (KNMG)
The Netherlands Society of General Practitioners,
The Netherlands Society of Youth Healthcare Physicians,
The Netherlands Association of Paediatric Surgeons,
The Netherlands Association of Plastic Surgeons,
The Netherlands Association for Paediatric Medicine,
The Netherlands Urology Association,
The Netherlands Surgeons’ Association
Royal College of Surgeons of England*
Swedish Pediatric Society
College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia
South African Medical Association
Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
Australian Medical Association
Australasian Association of Pediatric Surgeons
Australian Federation of AIDS Organizations

Even the CDC does not endorse it as being a health benefit, as they are still trying to determine if it's even beneficial to routinely surgically alter young boys. CDC - Recommendations - Male Circumcision - Research - Prevention Research - HIV/AIDS

There is much to be argued about the ethics of male circumcision but you lose the "battle" when you compare it to FGM.

Yeah, but there isn't anything to be 'argued' about FGM. It's deplorable and obviously such. The fact that this person was able to get people to sign a petition changes nothing, says little, and is really, kind of a dead issue.

It's no surprise that it sparks people to raise the issue that actually IS an issue for them.

It's an issue of semantics. It's hard not to think of accepted male genital mutilation for religious purposes when someone brings up unacceptable female genital mutilation.

But you are right, I think.

It's like pointing out that women in North America cover their breasts both by law (in many jurisdictions) and due to general accepted moral standards (everywhere in North America). This is precisely what they do in Afghanistan. Except they are wearing burquas which cover the women from head to foot. Same exact principle, very different in practice.

From the conclusions of the 1996 policy of the Canadian Pediatric Society:

"The overall evidence of the benefits and harms of circumcision is so evenly balanced that it does not support recommending circumcision as a routine procedure for newborns....................When parents are making a decision about circumcision, they should be advised of the present state of medical knowledge about its benefits and harms. "

Which reads as it is the parent's perogative.....hardly a condemnation of the procedure.

And, according to this article, that neutral position is about to change in favour of circumcision:

Canada’s pediatricians set to reveal new policy on circumcision | canada.com

As for the American Academy of Pediatrics, well.........

"America’s most influential pediatricians group says the health benefits of circumcision in newborn boys outweigh any risks and insurance companies should pay for it. In its latest policy statement on circumcision, a procedure that has been declining nationwide, the American Academy of Pediatrics moves closer to an endorsement but says the decision should be up to parents."

Circumcision benefits outweigh risks; insurers should fund it: study | National Post

You asked him for a list of organizations that don't recommend it. Which is precisely what that quote says.

"Their review comes as new Canadian research suggests half of expectant parents would consider circumcision if they had a son — and that the single most important factor is the circumcision “status” of the father."

A very telling point from the Canada.com article Colpy posted.
