Boycotting Walmart

Practically everybody sells stuff made in China and in third-world sweat shops, so boycotting Walmart on that basis doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

By the way, you don't get a better quality of sock if buying at $10 a pair than you do at $2 a pair. Even if you did, five pairs of $2 socks will outlast one pair of $10 socks.

I'm guessing the rest of my post didn't register with you. My $10.00 socks likely last as long as your 5 but even if they lasted only as long as 3 I would rather support my neighbour then Oligarchs in 3rd world countries...........

I buy higher quality clothing made either in Canada or Great Britian and it lasts forever but costs I'm sure more than than stuff made for $38.00 a month........

I guess I should add that you won't find the stuff I buy at a box store. You have to go to a small clothier, which, also keeps the money local in Canada and affords these retailers to pay higher wages

I just saw flyers for both Sears and The Bay, and both acknowledged Canada Day here in Montreal. Same for Canadian Tire. It appears that out of the big boxstores, Walmart is the only one that refused to acknowledge Canada Day. If Walmart does not identify with Canadian culture, then maybe it should keep it's business back home in the U.S.

Dude... have you been following along with the thread?

Now get out there and shop Walmart! You know you want to and the stores will be packed! Walmart isn't going anywhere. Embrace it and buy Buy BUY!

There are reasons to boycott Walmart if you're so inclined--Third World sweatshops, shoddy Chinese-made merchandise, low wages, poor service, stuff like that--but not acknowledging Canada Day in Quebec, if indeed that's what they've done, isn't one of them, and to be consistent you'd have to boycott a lot of other major retailers too. The flyers I got today that I looked at--Best Buy, Future Shop, Peavey Mart, and Shoppers Drug--didn't acknowledge Canada Day either except as an excuse for a big sale on selected items to suck you into the store and sell you something else on impulse. And realistically, most of the items on sale are once in a long time purchases, if you already have one you don't need another. How many DSLRs do you need? If you have a Canon does a helluva deal on a Nikon matter? How many HDTVs can you use? If there's a particular big ticket thing I need or want I'll watch the flyers for a deal, but normally I don't pay much attention to them.

Yeah, this how I don't understand patriotism. So you're boycotting Walmart because they aren't exploiting our national holiday for corporate gain?

I don't know what the big deal is, they hire local people and pay taxes, not mention supporting charitable causes. If there was a Canadian owned store that could sell merchandise at the same price for the same quality, I'd patronize it, but there isn't!

Well, we don't want to go overboard. There is a common misperception perpetuated among marketers, that the more we buy the more we save, but that is stepping into the realm of fiction! -:)

You mean spending your way out of debt doesn't work? So the government is wrong then?

When you get to be as big as Walmart, you can control to some extent, the prices you pay your wholesalers. Other, smaller, stores selling the same products are at a dissadvantage right off the bat. A good part of what Walmart sells is junk. I don't shop at Walmart because I don't have to. The people who line up down the block like a herd of baying cattle for Walmart sales must be suffering from some weird bottomlinitus. I would be ashamed to even go in their store looking to save a quarter on a tube of toothpaste.

Remember the Mom and Pop stores??? Guess who drove them out of business???

Actually it's not. I buy stuff there that works and wears well.

Themselves.

That is exactly what I was going to suggest to #Juan.
