Islamic school won’t let 12-year-old girl play football, citing lustful thoughts and the Koran

An Islamic academy in Georgia put a significant dent in a 12-year-old girl's dream of one day earning a college football scholarship when the school's CEO allegedly cited the Koran and middle school boys' lustful thoughts as reasons for removing her from the team.

Locus Grove (Ga.) Islamic School CEO Hafiz Erwan told Maddy Blythe, 12, "that men and women are created equal but different, and he said that he prayed about it and it was the wrong thing to do," Maddy told WSB-TV. "I think it's kind of crazy and I think it's very archaic and he needs to get with the times."
While Blythe still appears in a team photo on the school's website, the coach reluctantly informed the Blythes that their daughter "would no longer be able to play" despite his best efforts to convince the CEO otherwise, CBS Atlanta reported.

"It's like taking my dream and throwing it in the trash," Maddy told 11Alive News.

Still, the Islamic School athletic director Muhammad al-Rahwani submitted this e-mail statement to the local NBC affiliate: "Our official policy is that middle school girls play girl sports and middle school boys play boy sports."

Maddy's mother Cassy Blythe, who served as a police officer before converting to Islam and turning her attention to raising six children, estimated her daughter registered a handful of sacks while receiving constant praise for her play as a defensive tackle for the Patriots last season.

"My girl can handle herself. I've seen girls in the military," Cassy Blythe told CBS Atlanta. "I've seen fellow female police officers who went out there and they busted tail and they were just a as good and if not better in some aspects."

More specifically, here is what Cassy Blythe said was addressed by the school in a letter to the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Her school called me in for a meeting to discuss her future. I was told by the CEO that he did not believe girls should play on boys teams. He was worried 1) the boys might have impure thoughts, 2) the locker room talk might be a bit much for her to handle, 3) boys and girls should not compete in any sport, 4) there are other sports she can play, 5) they are a private school and can make any decision they want, and 6) he prayed about it and this was the right thing to do. He also quoted the Koran by saying that men and women are created equal but different and therefore should not be allowed to play the same sports.

Hey, I had plenty of lustful thoughts in gym. Camel toes were the in thing back then.

Simplest solution would be to take her out of that perverted school and put her in a real one.

The downfall of modern society is its reliance on simple solutions.

Sticking with and effecting change isn't always simple. Kudos to them for pushing, for speaking, and for trying.

Ive always found it strange the way religious sexist men more or less admit that they are the ones with the problem but force the women to pay the price for it. They dont give themselves much credit if they think a few "impure thoughts" are going to lead to some sort of orgy in the locker room. They're 12. Its pretty much guaranteed that these "impure thoughts" are already happening pretty regularly by now regardless of what sports they play or with who. As for praying about it - well, if God said its not a good idea for boys and girls to play sports together then he should come down and tell us all. The word of an insecure sexist isnt good enough.

Football is a male sport.

Stick to netball ladies.

See there truly are parallels between "old world men" of all religious persuasions; misogyny comes in all forms...good to know.

I was pleased to see that the coach has no problem with her playing.

I am curious about mum and the hejab, does she or doesn't she?

Public schools won't allow boys to do gymnastics, volleyball, or synchronized swimming. So there's plenty of gender based discrimination going around from all sources.

Blacky, you sexist pig you.
We're talking Canadian football, not your football (we call that soccer over here).

Canadian football is a male sport, too.

If you're a man, you just try getting into your country's sychronised swimming team. They won't allow. So I can't see why some traditionally male sports should not allow women to play.

that's what she get for attending a private brainwashing religious school. I don't believe in private schools and so-called "alternative" and charter schools

It seems to me there are two separate sexist issues at play when discussing sports.

1. Should women be allowed to play a 'male' sport.

2. Should women be allowed to play on a 'male' team.

They have separate considerations. Women should be able to play whatever sport they darn well please, and men should be able to start a synchro team if they're so inclined.

But, when it comes to whether they should 'have' to have coed teams, I don't think they should (no, women should not have to allow men on their volleyball team for example). So then it becomes about demand.

First of all where is the mother? She converted to a backward archaic religion and has
subjected her daughter to the limitations of a religion in a country that believe the human
spirit should have no limitations. Instead of arguing with the school officials I would be
examining my whole belief system and politely inform the religious officials of my decision
to leave their little dictatorship. Religion of all stripes has this need to rule the lives of the
flock, that is why I left religion behind a long time ago so I could think for myself in peace.

I am still not sure if it's mysogyny as much as gynophobia. Perhaps it's both. Still not sure. But anyway, I really think there's a lot of ego involved when some men just can't handle women being adept at those "traditionally male activities". To me it's sometimes as funny as a SBD fart in an elevator.

Must be new since I went to school. Course that was a while ago.
Ditto.
