If only Canada had dealt with indigenous peoples the same way that Norway has.

The Sami people of Norway have been recognized as the First Peoples of Norway.
There are no reserves per se but there is a huge chunk of northern Norway recognized as First Nations or Sami territory with several other scattered chunks of land also included.
Norway has grouped all the bands, tribes and native cultures into one central nation, the Sami.
The Sami have an elected government that represents the Sami nation and that government is fully represented in sitting Federal and Municipal governments.
All elected Sami officials are unpaid, the state of Norway does not accept responsibility for funding Sami nation politicians.
The Sami nation is recognized by Norway as an elected nation but its only mandate is preservation of Sami culture, language and history.
Lands set aside as traditional Sami lands are governed by a board consisting of 50% elected Sami and %50 federal bureaucrats.
No agreement between the two parties means any issue stalls.
Housing, leased land, business development is all allowed on Sami territory with debate.
Resource extraction, pipelines, roads, powerlines , mining and so on do not require Sami permission or debate to be developed on Sami traditional lands.
There is no compensation.
Clear cut logging and dam building require Sami permission.
The Sami are treated exactly like all other Norwegians and are considered fellow countryman first and formost.
Norwegian courts do not recognize the Sami as having any special rights or priveleges with a few exceptions.
Only the Sami can herd or possess reindeer.
The Sami are granted access to all rural lands in Norway.
The Sami are granted access to waterways and the coastlines and oceans .
The government of Norway completely funds a Sami university which teaches Sami culture, folklore, art, language and dialects and history.
And that is roughly about it.
No free this or free that.
The Sami never signed treaties, however Vikings back then were more about rape and pillage than treaty signings.
And unlike Canada Norway has no plans to create any new treaties.
Keep in mind when you roll into a town in traditional Sami country the major, the fire chief, the police force and the local judicial system is all likely to be Sami.
So I would assume you would keep any derogatory or racist views to yourself.

One very small question. How did this woman get her hands on the money in the first place? Did someone just hand her twenty odd million and she made all the decisions on how to spend it? Did she get paid in cash? If the feds dodn't have something to do with this cock-up, they should have had.

Shouldn't step one of a hunger strike be removing yourself from the position of authority? I'm sorry but if what they're saying in the media about her medical condition due to her 'liquid diet' is to be believed, she should NOT be making decisions for anyone about anything.
