Red states receive, on average, far more from the federal government in expenditures than they pay in taxes. The balance is the opposite in blue states. The secession petitions, therefore, give the opportunity to create what would be, in a fiscal sense, a far more perfect union.

Among those states with large numbers of petitioners asking out: Louisiana , which gets about $1.45 in federal largess for every $1 it pays in taxes; Alabama , which takes $1.71 for every $1 it puts in; South Carolina, which takes $1.38 for its dollar; and Missouri, which takes $1.29 for its dollar.

Since the effort gained attention this week, copycats in all but a few states have joined the petition drive. To be fair, White House officials could refuse the secession petitions of states Obama won, such as New York (which gets only 79 cents on its tax dollar), Michigan (85 cents) and Colorado (79 cents).

Depending on how aggressive a fiscal hawk he wishes to be, Obama could also try to offload onto the Confederacy of the Takers North and South Dakota and Montana ($1.73, $1.49 and $1.58 in benefits, respectively), but this would probably only work if Canada agreed to allow overflight rights for American aircraft to reach the West Coast states of Washington, Oregon and California (88 cents, 97 cents and 79 cents on their tax dollars, respectively).

I kinda laugh at this but at the same time, I know I used to get pretty worked up over elections in Canada to the point where in fits of pique (namely after Chretien's majorities) I would think Alberta should separate. It never really lasted but I daresay I also did a more thorough evaluation of the pros and cons than most of the "reasoning" behind these states wanting to secede.

Let me get this right.......They...the U.S. held an election and Obama won. This is not good enough for some crazies
who regardless of the election, want another outcome. Is this not the same country that holds up their election
as a grand example for democracy everywhere? Some people are obviously not on the same page.

I'm sure it's mostly tongue in cheek, but for those who are serious, <shrug>, it's their right to petition for it.

It's also nothing new after an election and not something unique to republicans, the Dems did the same in the past:

Still smarting from the results of the Presidential and Congressional elections, a number of Democrats and liberal pundits have opined that the "blue states" ought to secede from the Union.

A fact they don't like to admit to... along with them all saying they'll go to Canada if Bush wins.

Sadly they stayed. ;)

I heard an immigration lawyer on the radio who said every election has people claiming they want to leave. In his 30 years he has only seen 4 follow through.

Of course we accept Obama's election victory, but that doesn't mean we will not resist the imposition of his agenda with hammer and tong. The US Constitution was structured to allow a determined minority to bring change to a halt.

OMG, someone doesn't know the difference between a presidential democracy and a parliamentary democracy. Different animals.

Ooooo the big bad Republicans... Oooooo they want to secede from the Union... Oooooo they want to take all the poor's freebies away and give it to the rich... Ooooo they're all buying more guns....Oooooo they wanna push grandma off the cliff

LOL... Grow up you clowns..

The only 'bad Republicans' in my mind are the ones who either suborned or bought a large faction of the party into believing that their message would ensure a victory. I don't for a moment believe that you, Eagle bought into that tripe. I believe that you are a Republican who might feel a tad betrayed by the party you put your faith in believing that the core values of the party would win the day.

I understand that you feel the need to defend your position/beliefs.............but I would advise you to save your arguments for those who are able to articulate a decent argument. Railing against the lesser lights drains you of energy, fails to further your cause and will never change the minds of those who have lost theirs.

My beloved country is sailing sunny seas. Canada is a bright light in times of financial peril - yet the very government who guided the ship of state is daily denigrated.

Defending one's beliefs can be challenging but I believe in reserving my energies for the big battles.

It's called State Funding Transfers.

Those States ask for that money because they do not have the tax revenue to provide for their citizens............

Federal law provides an easy process for people to renounce their citizenship. There are a few requirements, but they are easily met. All they have to do is appear in person before a U.S. consular or diplomatic officer in a foreign country (normally at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate) and sign an oath of renunciation.

Sure they will have to pay all the taxes the owe and a special tax penalty under the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act of 2008. But that's a tiny price to pay for freedom from the United States and its evil Kenyan, Socialist, post hoc colonial, communist President and all those who voted for him. Besides, America is doomed anyway with but a few months left.

Talking up secession while taking more than $6 billion in stimulus cash from Obama? Pure Texanism in action

Texas financed $6.4 billion of its $6.6 billion budget shortfall in fiscal years 2010 and 2011 with cash from President Obama’s 2009 Recovery Act. On the same day Perry accepted the funds, he set up an online petition titled “No Government Bailouts.” Pure Texanism in action.

Just one little nit-picky point about wording in this thread (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)....

I have yet to see any actual STATES asking to leave the union. I've seen petitions by a relative handful of citizens, but I suspect it would take a lot more than 25000 people signing a petition, to amount to an actual state government asking to secede.

So don't paint a whole state (or a whole party for that matter) with the same brush. I'm sure there are way more Republicans who don't want to secede despite the defeat, than there are ones who do.

Then let's cut that money and see who it affects shall we? Cut those funds to those red states and see who screams bloody murder.

PS
Maybe those pesky publicans will come to Kanada? Nah... Heard a British re-searcher was offered 10,000,000$ to live in Edmonton. Returned the money afer a short bit of bad weather!

Splitting up a country over what you believe to be true rather than what is true is foolsplay. People are simply too lazy to be objective and rational.

Yup. Luckily it only affects a relatively small amount of right wing delusionals. By contrast, there remain some who speak the truth (in this regard, at least):

Secession: Confederacy of Dunces Plays into Media's Hands

Secession: Confederacy of Dunces Plays into Media's Hands

In the wake of a brutal election loss, some of us are disappointed and want to lodge a protest -- I'm not unsympathetic to that, I get it, I really do. I got it in 2000 and in 2004 when my favorite sport was mocking left-wing movie stars who threatened to flee the country after Bush won. But therein lies the point: If conservatives are going to mock the disappointed who want to flee the country after an election loss, shouldn't we be doing the same thing now?
