Updated at 5:11 a.m. ET: At least 10 people were killed and dozens of others wounded early Friday when at least one assailant opened fire during a shootout scene in a midnight screening of the summer blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises" near Denver, authorities and witnesses said.

NBC affiliate KUSA-Denver, citing local officials, said 10 people were killed and at least 39 people were transported to local hospitals. Details remained sketchy.

One suspect was in custody, police said. It was unclear whether other suspects were involved.

The incident occurred in the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center, police told NBC News. Aurora is a suburb less than 10 miles east of downtown Denver.

Brenda Stuart, of 850 KOA radio, told Britain's Sky News that "a lot of people thought the gunshots were part of the movie."

"They heard what they thought were firecrackers," she added, citing witnesses. "Then they saw the bullets flying."

Eyewitness reports said the assailant may have been wearing a gas mask, Stuart said.

Tear gas went off in the theater following the gunfire, Stuart said. She added that bullets had passed from one theater into an adjoining one.

Police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said "the scene is still very active."

Wow. I can't imagine simply going to the movies and ending up in a body bag or the ICU. Wonder what this loser's 'motivations' will turn out to be.

He didn't even have the decency to blow his own brains out.

He killed a bunch of people in a southern state that has the death penalty. I imagine the state will do that for him in about ten years. I was a bit surprised that there was no suicide. Pretty much all mass shootings end with suicide or the killer being killed by cops.

Looking on the bright side he'll provide a little fodder for the shrinks to study!

When did Colorado start being recognized as a southern state?

I wasn't aware Colorado was classified as Southern. :)

Glad it does have the death penalty although I think the 10 years is probably conservative. These things drag on with almost infinite appeals.

Yeah, as far as the U.S. is concerned I think "southern" has more to do with demographics than location.

I don't think you'll find too many people in Colorado who consider themselves 'southern'. You might earn yourself a blood nose if you go there and tell them they are.

My sister lives in a Denver bedroom and I call her a southerner all the time because she moved south of the 49th and has been there so long she talks funny.

You don't have to go that far south, years ago we stopped in Sedro Woolley WA (60 miles south the Peace Arch crossing) for gas and the attendent informed me "your ohl is at a fine level, Sir".............my kids while mimicking this guy for the rest of the day were "pissing their pants".

We had a young lady from Texas stay at our place for a couple of weeks. She was so disappointed to discover that we sat"Howdy" and "ain't". She went from our place to Penticton area and has now decided that she wants to move to BC after finishing university.

While "ain't" isn't considered "Queen's English", I really can't see much wrong with "howdy".
