Yep, and when it comes to speech, up to yelling fire in a crowded theater, when there ain't one, is just fine... ;-)
And targeting an ethic group- religion - sexual orientation is/ can also be a Hate Crime. In the US they have NAZI's protected under free speech- That is not what I want in Canada.

You can define free speech into at least 3 categories- Not hate speech- and that which a person finds offensive, but does not qualify as Hate Speech- The rest is in the middle of disagreement.

As long as you don't call for the assault or murder of anyone in those groups, have at it. Let freedom reign!!!

Yep, that's awesome. They also protect the rightso f NAMBLA.

I support that too.

As long as they're out in the open, you can hear them, see them, and counter them.

When you force them underground with silly hate speech laws, you remove the ability to counter what they say, with reason and truth.

In the dark, their hatred can ferment, unhindered, unchallenged.

That is not what I want in Canada.
It's what I want. I like the free exchange of unhindered thought. Even when I mock the mangled diseased thoughts of Joo haters.

I was sitting on a park bench in downtown Nelson one day and a group of neo-nazi skin heads in camo started talking about rag heads, nigas, etc, ad nauseum. Finally I got up and walked over to them and said, "Look you ignorant bunch of clowns, the pure Aryan race lives in Pakistan and are as black as the ace of spades. Go get an education, you pin heads."

I am all for free speech, but if you run into someone spewing hate, call them on it. Don't trust this stuff to governments or bureaucrats. They will screw it up, for sure.

Black white yellow or green with purple polka dots,no one should say kill anyone who's not my skin color.
You're preaching to the choir son.

But sometimes visible minorities get away with it, because they are visible minorities.

I am uneasy with the baby step approach to statism. Open dialogue is the enemy of extremism. Until they promise to record and video, then charge various protesters for their verbal diarrhea they need not selectively muzzle those with a different opinion.
Just imagine a native protester in court for hurting the feelings of the "dirty white bastard" whose face he was in. That door swings to and fro along with up and down.

This isn't freedom of speech, this creates the situation where I can go out in front of the mall and tell everyone that Jews are evil and need to be killed and I would be committing a crime, but if I gave them cards that gave them a phone number where I told them the same thing, that would be fine.

Further to that, it is hard to consider this freedom of speech when if I went around calling Colpy a pedophile, that would make me liable for civil libel charges, but if I went around calling gays pedophiles that would be just fine. I obviously don't think Colpy is a pedophile, I use him as an example because of his editorial choice for the title of this thread.

The useful thing of the human rights tribunal is that instead of making hate speech a crime, it made it a tort. But hey, lets swat flies with a sledgehammer.

It ain't perfect, but it's a good start!

That operated outside the purview and oversight of any binding code or legal body.

Many of their decisions were based on emotion, using the ambiguous and ridiculous section 13.
