State Secretariat has Lady Gaga ban letter
The State Secretariat -– not the President -- has received a letter urging that Lady Gaga be banned from performing in Indonesia, written by the notorious Islamic People’s Forum (FUI) and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).
But the letter has never reached President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as suggested by media reports, according to his spokesman, Julian Aldrin Pasha.
“I have never seen the letter on the President’s desk… it’s not at the President’s level [to deal with such an issue],” Julian told reporters.
“The State Secretariat has dealt with the letter.”
The Jakarta Police had reportedly claimed it received a recommendation from the President’s office suggesting that a ban on Lady Gaga from performing should be examined, as proposed by a number of Islamic organizations.
The National Police eventually refused to issue a permit for the promoter to organize the concert, due to take place on June 3 at Bung Karno Main Stadium in Senayan.
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution claimed the decision was aimed at maintaining Jakarta’s conduciveness given the rampant rejections from numerous civilian groups.
One infamous hard-line group, the Islam Defenders Front (FPI), fervently opposes Lady Gaga’s concert in Indonesia, saying that it would send its members to intercept the American singer when she arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
“Lady Gaga is bringing the faith of Satan to our country and thus will destroy the nation’s morals,” the chief of FPI’s Jakarta branch, Habib Salim Alatas, said.
