OTTAWA - Preston Manning cautioned his fellow Tories on Saturday that the conservative movement in Canada must practice as well as preach ethical policies, be open to new ideas, and better train political candidates.


The patriarch of the modern-day Conservatives highlighted the three challenges facing the governing party - ideas, training, and ethics - during a keynote speech to hundreds of Tories who've gathered in Ottawa for the Manning Centre conference hosted by the former Reform party leader.

You might be right. This is the kind of candidate I'm more likely to vote for, and that's probably why "I'll vote for you" is likely the last thing a candidate who knows my voting record would ever want to hear come from my mouth; not a single candidate I've voted for yet has ever won. On the plus side, I don't vote strategically, only on principle; and I've even handed in a few blank ballots: so if I vote for you, it's because I really think you deserved it. It might lose you the election, but at least you'd know it's a sincere and genuine vote for you as a person and not your party colours.

The fact that he was the leader of the Reform Party also did not help his reputation since it also associated him with the Quebec-flag-stompers and other xenophobes of their ilk. Again, another good reason to vote candidate rather than party.

No party has ethics. They can have an ethics policy, but at the end of the day it's individuals who practice it.

There wasn't one member who declined it. Their were either liars in the campaign or they got as greedy as any other one lining up for the freebies. Voters should insist that no member can serve more that 4 years, that way more people get to enjoy some benefits, it isn't like the ones in power are essential for the Gov running. Any pwerson voted in can run it for 4 years without crashing it, give them more time and they might be so bad that they do some real damage. Make them all a one term wonders, with a pension that is smaller than their wages

The last time MP pensions were on the chopping block was 1993, when Preston Manning and the Reform Party came to Ottawa to change the way Canada did politics. The Reformers said gold-plated MP pensions put politicians out of touch with ordinary Canadians. They did the noble thing by “opting out” of the parliamentary pension plan. But when Jean Chrétien’s government gave them the opportunity to retroactively opt in after the 2000 election, the take-up was nearly unanimous.

There was an outcry last May when it emerged that defeated Bloc Québécois leader, Gilles Duceppe is in line to receive $140,000 a year from taxpayers, despite devoting his career to breaking up the country.
