Hey guys,

I'm starting this thread to make a community of "Money-saving new Canadians"/ After immigration, I realized that life isn't as easy here as it seemed back home. You have to work day in and day out to make a living. But what I found out is that you can save a great deal of money if you are smart and know how to save money.
Smart shopping and a bit of effort on our end can save us extra bucks to enjoy family-time over the weekend !

I'm really beginning to wonder if you and JLM are in some type of competition to see who can say the most idiotic things on this forum. I have the right to have power. Unlike Liz, I must earn it. Why is the concept of earning what you have so distasteful to you (or do you not find it distasteful and are just incapable of grasping what the discussion is about)?

I'm beginning to wonder if you are becoming the new Canadian Content version of Doc Dred. Acting like a total A-Hole just for the heck of it.

The feeling is mutual but the nattering from the likes of you Gerry and JLM, does nothing to address the issue of why Liz gets to have this power. I can only gather that you have no real defense of the idea of birth rite.

Anybody out there a noble? "nobles were dedicated to the preservation of their privilege by birthright alone; in England." As to why Liz holds the power? Just because she does. "Its tradition".

I give this proposal by the Young Liberals pretty much the same response I give to Dumpy when he brings this up:

What do they want to replace the Monarchy with, to justify the expense of doing away with the institutions, name changes and other administrative costs? Seriously, it would have to be a pretty good alternative to get the majority of the provinces on board with the constitutional ammendments it would require.

I can understand the logic behind wanting to get away from non-democratic institutions like the Monarchy but to me, democracy is not the end game as much as good government. When I look at the sub-debate Cannuck and Machjo are having, I have to admit something that is not popular or polite: I believe people are stupid cattle at times and as such do not know what is good for them. To me an undemocratic Monarchy, which acts as a check on our democratic system is a very good counter to mob rule and with the constitutional limitations on the Monarchy, I don't know that it can get any better. In a historical sense, I try to assess what was worse: the selfish and uncaring autocrats in France or the bloody purges of the mob in the French Revolution? Furthermore, if people really want to attack undemocratic Canadian government institutions, why is there more noise about cutting our royal ties than about reforming the senate?

Funny how when it comes to changing some things, it is just so hard, so why try? I just watch another dumb show instead. Being lazy is always the best choice. More beer and pretzels please.

Why any one thinks an undemocratic institution like the monarchy is a "check" on democracy spends too much time in front of their TV already. It is the most illogical argument possible. An institution, supported by taxpayers, many of whom have to do actual physical labour, have their aspirations sneered at by those who do not do constructive work of any sort, who get their lofty position because of their parents. Democracy takes work, the monarchists don't understand that, like modernity, it is always on trial, open to discussion and change.

Pretty soon I'll read how cheap the monarchy is.

That is all they can think off - Get rid of the Monarchy - What forward thinking, who else would have thought of such a policy that adds jobs, assists the poor, sort out Medicare. I - No they are dumbfounded. So if looking for dumb, see a young Liberal and you have found it.

With thinking like that I guess Harper will be in power for his Old Age Pension.

I'd be surprised if this became a part of their platform. It's a good start though. Maybe in a few decades we'll get there.

I'd be surprised if it became part of the party's platform too, just because there is no real desire for it from the populace, regardless of what Young Liberals may think on an ideological level. I disagree that "we'll get there" ever though, because without some pretty radical change, the country will never survive the re-writing of the constitution that this would necessitate.

Is thinking things through your definition of lazy, Dumpy? I've repeatedly said I am not married to the idea that we must have a monarch but that I don't believe in change without benefit and challenged you to show me the goods... which you have steadfastly refused or been unable to do.

And yes the Monarchy, as it applies to Canadian politics IS a check on our democracy, perhaps moreso than the courts, who are also supposed to function in that role (in terms of interpreting the constitution validity of law), but whose members are APPOINTED by sitting gov'ts. Where the Monarchy is pretty much apolitical, the courts are made up of those who have at least made an effort to stay on the good side of their political masters. Or would you like to see us elect judges and senators as well?

And yes, keeping the Monarchy IS cheaper than replacing it would be. You can go back to watching Sesame Street now...

Because we should have the freedom to choose to **** ourselves over.

You do have that Freedom. All you have to do is get enough people like Cannuck and Dumpthemonarchy together and you will get that choice, but there presently aren't enough people who think this this irrelevant piece of business is worth consideration when there are far more pressing things to deal with like the economy and all the other things that really affect everyday Canadians.

Which explains why the Liberals are where they are. They just don't get it.
