I love that Sid was able to return and make such an impact. A couple things...

- living 25 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, I can tell you Crosby's concussions got a fair bit of attention but it did not come close to the attention of Congresswoman Gifford's condition (rightfully so).

- don't kid yourself into thinking a 4 pt night against the Isles is nothing. They may be in a bit of a funk right now but there is a lot of young talent in that organization... and they are still professionals: they don't just lay down for anyone.

- Matt Cooke has been playing on Crosby's team the last couple years, so its not HIS elbows Crosby has to worry about

- Don Cherry, for all his controversial comments, does not advocate dirty play. He IS almost religious about admonishing kids who may be watching and minor hockey coaches to keep their heads up. Tough, physical play does not mean dirty. Yes, our definitions are changing, and some have been slower to accept that than others but criticizing Cherry over the league, when the NHL has only started addressing head shots in the last couple seasons is ridiculous.

I think any team would have been in a bit of a quandary over how to handle Sid's come-back, wulfie. They just happened to be the team on the ticket last night. Sure their game was less than it could have been but the night was all about Sid and playing in his house - the one his name helped build - as one hockey host pointed out - with thousands of fans screaming and yelling every time he hit the ice - it must have been almost overwhelming.

I do think the real test of his abilities will come when he faces teams a bit higher in the standings but for an opener - well it was something to see.

Lindross was a goof, a whiner and a mama's boy, I lost a lot of respect for the N.H.L. the day an 18 year old brat was able to dictate where he was going to play.

His dad was his agent and Daddy wouldn't let him play for the Quebec Nordiques, who drafted him. The NHL should have laid down the law then. As it turned out, he wasn't that much of a star.

The player who takes Crosby out of the game will be about as popular as a turd in a punch bowl. The sooner the NHL gets rid of the
Don Cherry influence the better. Crosby did fine for a few years until he walked into Mat Cooke's high elbows. Cooke is not qualified to
carry Crosby's sticks, but by taking Sid out he cost the whole league a lot of money. The League will have to deside whether they want
highly skilled players like Crosby or goons like Cooke.

as much as can't stand cooke, it wasn't him who hit crosby, he hit savard, and now savard has had to
retire because of that hit, and other concussions he received.

cooke and crosby are both on pittsburgh

I can't remember the guy who first hit him, then he came back and played again
and got another hit in another game, which seemed to complete the injury.

I think any team would have been in a bit of a quandary over how to handle Sid's come-back, wulfie. They just happened to be the team on the ticket last night. yes, their choice of 'what' team they were going to play when he returned seemed to be well thought out,
a team that is floundering, many losses in a row, can't seem to get going this season at all, so it
was a bit of an easy game, but he still shone.
He won't look like that every night, there are about 29 other teams who are better than the islanders,
but he had to start somewhere, and that was a good place I guess.

his doctor in charge of his recovery from the concussion said at the press conference that 'Sidney will be completely recovered.
He won't be in danger of becoming worse if he receives another concussion sometime
in the future, in other words, his brain is not damaged or more vulnerable because
of this concussion.'
That seems to tell the story of concussions. If players or anyone doesn't come
back to their job too soon, and waits for complete healing, there is no danger
from the next one.
I remember savard two years ago, trying to participate in the play offs, after he
had been out almost all season, and couldn't handle it, very very poor decision,
now his career is over, one of the best players in the league.
Obviously he had returned from the previous concussion too soon as well, a familiar
scene in sports, maybe now that will change.

I agree with your first three points. Cherry is smart enough to tell you what it's safe for him to tell you. Whatever Bobby Orr or Dougie Gilmour did is perfectly all right with Cherry. He is a very good rationalizer!

Do I smell a conflict of interest? Hope that bullsh*t isn't happening any more!

I always (used to think) Matt Cooke was an OK player, who had a lot of talent and could get things done. Haven't followed him for years!

when with the canucks matt cooke was a fiesty energetic fairly good player, but he was gutless. He
would infuriate the other team by doing dirty little things, then when the crowd gathered he would
make sure he was very close to a linesman, and pretend the linesman was holding 'him' back from being
agressive, which he wasn't at all.
He refused to fight when called out for his dirty little deeds.

That is why he was traded away, his lack of integrity, vineault hated him, one could see by the look
on his face during scuffles, as vineault is a very proud person, as he was a player, never turned
away from responsibility, and would never hit in a dirty way, then run when the going got tough.

Actually watched some of the game last night, and was amazed at the Kid's moves. That being said, so probably were the goons watching him.

Only a matter of time before someone collects a scalp. It is rockem sockem a la Cherry, after all.

Here's hoping Sidney can get through the rest of his life without a wheelchair and drool.

That's what I'm thinking.... I've been a pens fan since the Mario/Jager days, and when there's a player who's great with the puck and seems to get it in the net more than most, they're a threat to the other teams and it won't be long before someone comes along to smash their face into a wall to take them out for a while..... which is a shame.

They can't out perform them, so they'll try and take them out of the game for a while..... and age old tactic.

One way to put a stop to that nonsense, $million fine and three year suspension.

That game was set up no less than The Globetrotters vs the Washington Senators match. They played a bunch of lifeless stooges in atmosphere hellbent on worshipping Crosby's head. Sooner or later he'll have to play against a team that doesn't just step aside and watch.

One of the hits was from David Steckel(who played for Washington at the time). I can't recall if his hit was dirty or not. I also cannot remember who the other player was that hit Crosby, and who was the one who hit Crosby first.

I was over here in Australia at the time, but if I remember correctly, it was during the old-skool outside match between Washington and Pittsburgh where Crosby was smacked the first time and then only a few days after that he was clubbed again and put out for the rest of the season.

Washington and Pittsburgh have a long history of rivalry over the years, going back at least as far as the late 80's / early 90's when I first started paying attention to hockey and following Pittsburgh..... hits, fights, trying to take out players, etc.

I think the steckel hit was the first one, then he was hit by the big young hedman on tamba bay, actually
none of the hits looked really awful, but it seems the combination of the two did the damage.

first one in the winter classic kind of fuzzy in my memory, maybe someone hit me. lol

there is mixed opinions if steckel's hit was intentional or not, only steckel
actually knows because it is a type of hit that could be accidental or intentional.
my husband thinks he knew exactly what he was doing, but pretended he didn't,
could be.

That's what I'm thinking.... I've been a pens fan since the Mario/Jager days, and when there's a player who's great with the puck and seems to get it in the net more than most, they're a threat to the other teams and it won't be long before someone comes along to smash their face into a wall to take them out for a while..... which is a shame.

these players, (in this day of hockey) want to continue playing, and if they actually go around
with intentional viciousness in mind, their own careers will end, that is the facts 'now', years
ago, the goons, which are few and far between now, were on most teams, and the instigator rule was
not invented yet, and there were many players who couldn't play or skate that well, but had a job to do,
by fighting and protecting stars, so all the stars had their body guards, can't do that any more, and shanahan is
watching.
The players want to play not lose their jobs. The age old tactic is worn out, doesn't mean hits won't
happen, but I don't believe players hunt out good players to injure.

The last one was cooke on savard, no penalty, (rule change because of that hit), then he did the big
elbow, big suspension, rest of the season, he missed all of the playoffs, he is a different player now,
keeping his nose clean, or next time he will be finished for a whole season, or maybe his career.
He wasn't hunting out savard, he just did a stupid violent hit on whatever player
happened to be in that vulnerable position at that moment, he has paid for that
hit many times, has been beat up in games by players who find him disgusting and
gutless, but savard paid the biggest price, his career is finished.

The problems in the game right now, is the speed and size of the players, and stuff will happen because
of that, but it is just the way it is, a fast dangerous game, they choose to play because they love it,
so they will take the risk, just like many take risks in many sports and activities in life.
