This thread is a little out of date. I can't think of anything short of a heart attack or stroke!

Canadians think NDP leader should be bilingual: poll

An Ipsos Reid poll, conducted exclusively for Postmedia News and Global Television, found that 78 per cent of Canadian adults polled want the next leader of the New Democratic Party to speak both official languages.

The results come just after Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed a unilingual auditor general and Supreme Court judge.

Among Quebecers, 96 per cent of those polled agree that the new NDP leader should a solid grasp of both English and French. But support is high across the country. Even at its lowest, in the Prairies, it is still 59 per cent.

Among NDP supporters, 84 per cent said the leader should be capable of speaking fluently in both languages.

Many of those in the running for the leadership can speak English and French, including party strategist Brian Topp and MPs Thomas Mulcair and Peggy Nash. However some, such as MP Paul Dewar, primarily speak English. Dewar has promised to work on his French.

Exactly what does the linguistic versatility of the leader of a political party have to do with either the A-G or a Supreme Court justice???

Of course the leader of the NDP should be bilingual, as he has to attract votes across the country, in both English and French regions......he is a politician. He is chosen for his job by the people at large, and he must be capable of appealing to them when he applies for the job of MP....or (Heaven forbid!!!) PM.

Even Preston Manning learned to speak French. More or less. :)

Bureaucrats and Justices are an ENTIRELY different matter. Less than 18% of the population of this country is English/French bilingual. To restrict our choices to that shallow end of the talent pool is simply stupid. If a person has the requisite skill, and is at the top of his game, his bilingualism should be a minor concern. Translation services are available and efficient......and there is really no need for either to explain themselves to the public at large, nor any requirement to directly appeal to the people at large.

Not only that, but the aforementioned 18% are almost entirely urban, and from central Canada......not to mention disproportionately from French-Canadian roots........a culture with a recent tradition much more socially conscious and left of centre than that elsewhere in Canada.

The bureaucracy in Canada wields incredible power over the structure, culture, and character of the nation. To restrict the upper echelons of bureaucracy and justice to that linguistic elite of 18% is to twist the government of the nation away from the people of the nation: it creates a gulf, as the culture of government become radically alienated from the culture at large......

That we don't need.

Trudeau was an idiot.

I never knew someone could get so upset over people wanting a bilingual leader. Way to show your stripes, Colpers. :)

Upset?

Who is upset?

One wonders if you even read the post....I AGREE that it is necessary that the leader of the NDP be bilingual.....my only dispute was the idiot from the Montreal Gazette equating that in any way to the appointment of justices and bureaucrats.....

A little ADDS there, MF????

Nooo... you're not upset at all.. :p

Well, you are becoming mildly irritating......how about dealing with the subject at hand?

Geez, I even had a giggle at Manning's expense in the middle of the post.

Obviously, I was in a towering rage! lol

Beating Harper or beating Harpers cult, Canadians who don't make the distinction are going to be disappointed. Harper is not Canadas problem, his supporting cult certainly is. As long as the political system remains unchanged there will be nothing but Harpers, Obamas, Perrys, Blairs, Camerons, Berlesconies, Hitlers and Bushes. Beating Harper won't address anything in Canada. We might as well drink ourselves blind. Trouble is, Canada is directed by offshore interests, we are no longer sovereign, follow our tax dollars to the banks.

Eventually the entire planet will hang out with me. Resistance is futile. Surrender now and you and the rubber duck will be treated kindly.

In your wildest dreams :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Despite your negativity in this regard my plans for world domination proceed unimpeded. Those people given to unbelief would do well to recall that an organism like Harpercon was laughed at every day as a dreamer of the most innocent kind, even as he stormed the halls of power in Canada.
