U.K. snubs a Commonwealth nation Canada

http://ukincanada.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports

According to the UK Canada web site “We no longer issue standard (5 and 10 year) British passports at our High Commission in Ottawa. You now need to apply for your passport at our Regional Passport Processing Centre in Washington.”

This is bull crap of the royal kind

Britain has a very short memory on who stood by their side for years and which country revolted against them because of the king’s taxes.

Yet here we have it America is the only place to go for any British passport needs in North America.

Why would our Prime Minister even think of bringing back Canadian naval tradition by adding Royal in front of Canadian Navy?

By this act alone shows all that the U.K. does not care about their Commonwealth allies and maybe it is time for Canada to do the same

Seems they're centralizing the process. This is actually an interim process, before it is brought back to England itself, permanently.

No snub, just streamlining.

Unless you're looking for something to bitch about and failed to read the leaflet that explains why they're doing it. Not to mention the age of this news.

Why is this happening?
> By taking this action now, customers overseas
will still have access to a passport service
> In October 2010 IPS will introduce new style
passports containing more sophisticated security
features. They are required to do this to
continue to meet international quality and
security standards. It is not affordable to print
these new passports overseas

> The UK remains one of the few countries still
printing passports in Embassies, High
Commissions and Consulates overseas. This is
expensive to do and transferring blank
passports around the world presents a greater
security risk

> New designs and new processes are being
introduced to reduce the likelihood of identity
theft and passport fraud; protecting you and
international borders

> Integrating the two passports services into IPS
will reduce the cost of maintaining a passport
operation overseas, allowing us to continue to
offer secure passports to overseas customers.

Streamlining to a non Commonwealth country The Bits should have streamline it to Canada just because we are supposed to have a closer relations to the U.K. but it is looking like we don't.

There is nothing saying that if you live outside your country of citizenship that they have to provide you with a passport office close by. I am sure each office costs a pretty penny and they probably save a bunch by having you deal with Washington.

When my wife did here US passport renewal, she had to do it through Washington. She did it by mail. I am sure the British also offer a similar service.

Ya, keep stretching it pumpkin.

Did you think at all about traffic? Which office sees more of it?

The leaflet identifies a cost issue eh.

Try some critical though.

Yep, and they even offer emergency documents and will continue to do so at the High Commission in Ottawa.

You are missing the point. Canada is part of the Commonwealth and America is not and one could mail their passport information to Ottawa as well

You're awfully sensitive today.

And no he isn't.

It's a cost issue. Why should they pay more for a smaller market in Ottawa just because we're a commonwealth?

Give your head a shake, these are hard economic times.

You should stick to just making things up.

Why would you need two or three offices when there is only one North America?

Does it bother some to have to use a $1.15 stamp to mail the application off if on-line is too slow for you?

That statement is the same kind of thinking that turned six cities into one by Mike Hair Asss

Wow, speaking of stretches. I was thinking along those lines when I suggested you stick to making things up. But I guess I could have been more clear.
