I think we need a military as much for domestic concerns as fighting wars, sure could have used a few thousand troops last Wednesday night (and those A$$holes would have been laughing on the other side of their faces)

So, you advocate the government using the military in instances like this riot in Vancouver? Using our own troops against civilians, is that right?

Calling those rioters civilians is stretching things a bit. More akin to cockroaches. But aside from that the army does come in useful to help out people stupid enough to build on a flood plane or cities like Victoria that have no snow removal budget or equipment and allow their citizens to be caught with no power, phones or transportation or emergency services.

Damn handy for fighting forest fires too!

what jlm is advocating is NOT helping out in times of disaster, but using our military as a force AGAINST our own citizens. We have a police force for that.

From all reports the scenario in Vancouver after the hockey game was a disaster and from the same reports the number of police available was inadequate!

They have the option of asking the RCMP for help if they need it. Bringing military personal in AGAINST Canadian citizens is a no go period. We're not talking about domestic terrorists like the FLQ, who considered themselves an opposing "liberation army" against Canada.

Plus, the same damn thing happened in Vancouver in '94, so it's not like the city didn't have a heads up as to the possibilities.

It seems a big drawback the city had, going into that problem, was their 'mayor', who refused to give
the police the 'EXTRA' manpower they asked for, and the police did the best they could without the
help they needed.

I'm definitely not faulting the police in this. It's not me suggesting that the military should have been called in. All I said was IF they needed help they had options.

I know you weren't, just supplying a bit of info. They shouldn't have needed the military, there
was ample assistence, if city hall would have been co operative, but they were nieve and stingy.

The military are more efficient assisting in natural disasters, floods, etc., they shouldn't be
coming into a city in trouble, as vancouver was, could cause more trouble than help.

I think the military could have handled that situation- probably quite mild in comparison to what they are trained to handle.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could eat cupcakes regardless of whether they were in kindergarten or the military?

There shouldn't have been a 'situation' in the first place. Deciding to have 100,000 drunk people watching a hockey game outdoors was a bad idea. Anyone who has ever seen the results of a win, or a loss, in Montreal would know that. Whoever decided that was a bright idea is to blame.

The situation as it IS, is what has to be dealt with, if we only had to deal with situations as they should be then we could close all hospitals, get rid of all doctors and firemen and policemen. I doubt if there was a decision made to have 100,000 drunk people watching the game, but you're right but I doubt if there is one person to blame for it. The mayor has a council and I'm surprised none of them spoke up. Even though it turned out to be a bad decision that wasn't the cause and the perpetrators have to take full responsibility.

Oh come on Ariadne, get real. We can't have everyone eating cupcakes. People don't parent their children well enough for us to be able to afford cupcakes for all of them. And the terrorists would win!
