How 'bout an automatic $25 deduction on your incometax claim if you have proof
of voting (a chit receit of some type) that you receive at the polling station once
you turn in the ballot? It would be a motivator....

Funny about that - we'll go to war halfway around the world to give people the chance to vote, but people around here couldn't be bothered to do so themselves. What a completely messed up society we live in.

It is our obligation to vote, and furthermore, to make our voices heard. Contact your local candidates, and tell them what you want. Don't wait for someone to tell you what they'll do, tell them what you want them to do. Engage them.

Here's an idea:
Let's all, as members of CC, tell our candidates what WE expect from THEM. Let's be proactive, not reactive. We've become a society of watchers, not doers. Let's start doing, not watching. I'm going to contact the candidates in my riding, and tell them what I expect from a government. It's a small start, but it's a start. God knows, we all can sit here on this forum and spout ideas, it's no harder to email our candidates and tell them what we expect.

I just want to make it quite clear that just because someone chooses not to vote does not mean they give up all their right until the next election. I have made an informed choice to boycott an election in the past and yet still remained actively involved for the other 4yr 364days of the cycle.

Does not voting through laziness or apathy affect your credibility, sure, but so does turning out for 10 minutes every 4-5 years and then closing your eyes and hoping for the best the rest of the time.

You can vote or not vote but if you don't stay actively involved through contact with your local rep and contact with the government leadership and opposition and just complain to your friends for 5 years you are not participating in the process. These are the people who need to STFU!

Yes I did, they certainly have that right.

They also have the right to not be bothered to get off their fat asses and vote if they don't want to. And then complain about the poor governments they have, while they complain about the services they get, and they complain about the tax they pay.

We'll know that Egypt is a modern, western society when the primary occupation is whining and complaining about what someone else is doing, while the complainer does nothing whatsoever. Because that seems to be the ultimate in our society: do nothing, but complain about what anyone else does. Expect the government to look after you, but also complain about taxes you pay. Like everything else, it's always someone else's fault. Oh, poor pitiful me. Look what happened, through no fault of my own.

Do I sense some frustration? Are you as frustrated with the lack of choice in Ottawa as I am?

Me personally, I'm no big fan of taxes, but I came to the realization, like death, they're inevitable. What I find troublesome, is how that money is wasted reinventing wheels and thrown at special interest groups.

I just don't see anyone in Ottawa worth giving my vote to. I'm obviously not alone in that thought. Although I'm loath to throw my vote away again. And I certainly wouldn't abstain.

I believe in our democratic process and I also realize that like everything else, it is not perfect. I also realize that that it can be changed through our democratic process, but it cannot be changed if you chose to do nothing or if you just decide your going to stick your tail between your legs and sit in the corner sucking your thumb.

People can make a difference, if people are disatisfied. Many in the Middle East are just beginning to realize this now.

Unfortunately in the ME they either cannot use their vote or have chosen not to in a corrupt farcical democracy. I hope we don't come to the violent changes we are seeing there but also see this as somewhat a possibility in the reatively near future.

I don't just encourage people to make an informed vote , but stay actively involved every other day as well.
